New Delhi, November 12, 2025: A recent viral video that pointed out a significant discrepancy in the labeling of a popular coconut oil brand, Parachute, has ignited a major public debate regarding the authenticity of products labeled “100% pure coconut oil.”

The core of the controversy was centered on the difference between the prominent claim on the front of the bottle and the ingredient list on the back, which was shown to mention “vegetable oil.” This contradiction raised widespread questions about product purity and the integrity of marketing claims.

Market Analyst Ambareesh Baliga Weighs In on Production Costs

The discussion was amplified when prominent market analyst Ambareesh Baliga intervened, offering an expert perspective that was informed by his experience owning a coconut oil production facility. Baliga publicly shared a detailed breakdown of the current production economics, strongly suggesting that brands selling below a certain price threshold may be compromising on quality.

After accounting for basic processing and packaging, the total cost was estimated to be around ₹390-400 per liter. Baliga cautioned that any product sold substantially below this rate should be viewed with suspicion, as the inclusion of cheaper, blended oils would be required to cover massive costs like advertising and profit margins.

Consumer Confusion and the Need for Clarity Are Noted

The confusion was further compounded by the brand’s use of specific phrasing on different product variants. While one bottle was criticized for using the ambiguous phrase “With 100% Pure Coconut Oil” and listing “vegetable oil,” another version of the product was noted to clearly state “100% Pure Coconut Oil” and was found to list only coconut oil in its ingredients.

This subtle linguistic distinction was lost on many consumers who naturally interpreted the prominent front-of-bottle claim as an indication of unblended purity. The incident has underlined the urgent need for greater transparency in product labeling so that consumers can be provided with unambiguous information, allowing them to make truly informed purchasing decisions. The entire industry is expected to face increased scrutiny as a result of the viral attention.
