What initially appeared to be a tragic fire accident in a North Delhi apartment has been exposed by the Delhi Police as a chillingly premeditated murder, allegedly orchestrated by the victim’s live-in partner, a B.Sc. Forensic Science student. The police have arrested the woman and two accomplices, revealing a “perfect murder” plot that leveraged the accused’s knowledge of forensic science and was inspired by popular crime web series.
The victim, identified as 32-year-old Ramkesh Meena, a UPSC aspirant, was found with his severely charred body in his fourth-floor flat in Gandhi Vihar earlier this month after an explosion and fire ripped through the apartment. Initially, investigators suspected an electrical short circuit or an air conditioner blast. However, meticulous investigation and crucial CCTV footage soon pointed towards a sinister crime.
The arrested prime accused is 21-year-old Amrita Chauhan, a forensic science student, who was in a live-in relationship with Meena since May. The motive for the murder, according to police, was one of passion and revenge. Chauhan reportedly discovered that Meena had secretly recorded private videos and images of her on a hard disk and allegedly refused to delete them despite her repeated pleas.
To carry out the murder and dispose of the evidence, Chauhan allegedly enlisted the help of her former boyfriend, Sumit Kashyap (27), an LPG distributor, and their friend, Sandeep Kumar (29).
Police officials detailed the carefully laid plan: Chauhan, utilizing her academic understanding of forensics and her admitted fascination with crime shows, hatched a scheme to murder Meena and disguise the killing as a fatal accident caused by fire or a cylinder blast.
The crime took place on the intervening night of October 5th and 6th. CCTV footage showed two masked men, followed by a woman, entering the victim’s building. The trio—Amrita, Sumit, and Sandeep—allegedly first strangled and assaulted Ramkesh Meena.
In a morbid effort to obliterate evidence and ensure a devastating fire, the accused reportedly poured a mix of oil, clarified butter (ghee), and alcohol on the victim’s body. Sumit Kashyap, using his knowledge as an LPG distributor, then placed the domestic gas cylinder near the victim’s head, opened the regulator, and ignited the gas with a lighter.
Before fleeing, the accused meticulously attempted to secure the crime scene, locking the flat from the inside using a hole in the iron gate to delay discovery and avoid suspicion. They also made sure to steal the victim’s hard disk, laptops, and other belongings that might have contained evidence. The explosion, which occurred approximately an hour after their departure, was intended to incinerate the body beyond recognition and lend credence to the “accident” theory.
Despite the attempt at a perfect alibi, the police investigation, led by a dedicated team, quickly raised red flags. CCTV footage showed the trio entering and leaving the building just moments before the blast. Crucially, forensic findings at the scene contradicted the simple fire accident narrative. Furthermore, technical surveillance placed Amrita Chauhan’s mobile phone location near the crime scene at the time of the incident.
After multiple raids in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, the trio’s hometown, Amrita Chauhan was arrested. During interrogation, she confessed to the murder and revealed the involvement of Kashyap and Kumar. Following her confession, the police recovered the crucial hard disk, a trolley bag, and other stolen items. Sumit Kashyap and Sandeep Kumar were subsequently arrested.
The Delhi Police have registered a case under relevant sections relating to murder, criminal conspiracy, and destruction of evidence, effectively peeling back the layers of a meticulously planned crime to reveal a cold-blooded killing rooted in betrayal and a dark obsession with controlling the narrative.
