New Delhi, january 20, 2026: In a chilling incident that has sparked widespread outrage across the state, a 19-year-old photographer was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly throwing acid at a 14-year-old schoolgirl. The attack reportedly occurred after the minor refused to engage in conversation with him.

The accused, identified by police as Omprakash, worked as a freelance photographer at local wedding ceremonies. Authorities have confirmed that he is currently in custody and facing serious charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The Incident

According to preliminary police investigations, the victim was walking to her destination on Monday when Omprakash approached her on a motorcycle. Without warning, he allegedly splashed a corrosive substance on the girl and fled the scene.

Witnesses and locals rushed to the girl’s aid as she screamed in pain. She was immediately transported to a nearby hospital with significant burn injuries. Medical officials have since stated that while the injuries are serious, the victim is currently in stable condition and is “out of danger” thanks to the swift medical intervention.

Motive: A Case of Stalking and Entrapment

The investigation revealed that Omprakash first encountered the 14-year-old while working at a wedding event some time ago. Following that meeting, he reportedly began stalking her, frequently pressuring her to talk to him or share her contact details.

“The accused was persistent in his harassment. When the girl consistently ignored his advances and refused to speak with him, he allegedly planned the attack out of a sense of ‘revenge’ for the rejection,” a senior police official stated.

Police Action and Legal Charges

Following the attack, Rajasthan Police formed several teams to track down the accused, who had gone into hiding. Using local intelligence and surveillance, officers apprehended Omprakash within 24 hours of the incident.

The police have registered a case against him involving:

  • Acid Attack provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (the new criminal code replacing the IPC).
  • The POCSO Act, given the victim is a minor.
  • Stalking and Harassment charges.

Public Outrage and Safety Concerns

The incident has reignited the debate surrounding women’s safety and the ease of access to corrosive substances in the region. Civil society groups and local residents have held protests demanding the strictest possible punishment for the accused to serve as a deterrent.

“This is a heinous crime that reflects a complete lack of fear of the law,” said a local activist. “A 14-year-old’s life has been changed forever simply because she said ‘no.’ We need faster trials and more stringent regulation on the sale of acid.”

The state government has assured the victim’s family of full support, including medical expenses and legal aid, as the investigation continues.
