New Delhi, january 21, 2026: In a historic first for the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Assistant Commandant Simran Bala, a 26-year-old officer from Jammu and Kashmir, is set to lead an all-male contingent at the 77th Republic Day parade on January 26, 2026. This milestone marks the first time a woman officer will command more than 140 male personnel marching down Kartavya Path, symbolizing a significant shift in the leadership traditions of India’s largest paramilitary force.
Hailing from Nowshera, a border town in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, Simran’s journey is one of resilience. Growing up near the Line of Control, she was no stranger to the sounds of cross-border firing, experiences that fueled her desire to serve the nation.
She is the first woman from her district to join the CRPF as an officer. In 2023, she cleared the UPSC Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) examination in her very first attempt, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 82. Notably, she was the only female candidate from Jammu and Kashmir to qualify that year.
Simran’s selection to lead the all-male unit was not merely a symbolic gesture but a recognition of her exceptional skill. During the rigorous parade rehearsals, senior officers noted her:
Currently, Assistant Commandant Bala serves in the ‘Bastariya’ battalion in Chhattisgarh, a unit specialized in anti-Naxal operations. Her experience in one of the country’s most operationally challenging zones has further cemented her reputation as a capable field officer.
While women CRPF officers have participated in Republic Day parades before, commanding a large, exclusively male formation represents a “glass ceiling” moment.
“For the force, the moment reflects evolving traditions where leadership is recognized purely on merit,” officials noted.
The 2026 parade, themed ‘Swatantra Ka Mantra — Vande Mataram’ and ‘Samriddhi Ka Mantra — Viksit Bharat’, will also feature other displays of women’s empowerment, including the “Dare Devils” motorcycle team—a joint group of women from the CRPF and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
As Simran Bala leads her contingent from Raisina Hill toward the Red Fort, her march will serve as a powerful visual of a modern India where merit and dedication transcend traditional gender roles in national security.
