Chennai: A heavy rain subsided on Friday in Tamil Nadu. Depression has come over the Bay of Bengal and its main landfall area is Tamil Nadu. India Meteorological Department(IMD) has now withdrawn the red alert from Chennai. On Thursday between 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm the weather system had crossed the coastal area of Tamil Nadu.
IMD officially declared that thunderstorms with heavy rain occur over Vellore, Dharampur, Dindigul, Salem, Perambalur, Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Karur, Tirupattur, Namakkal, Virudhunagar, and Therkasi districts. Moreover, Nilgiri, Coimbatore, the Kanyakumari districts, and some coastal parts of Tamil Nadu are also likely to be witnessed thunderstorms with heavy rains. The rest of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are witnessing light to heavy rain. All educational institutions stay closed on Friday. The government has urged requests to the people to stay at home. Without emergency don’t come out of the house.
Depression brunt the Chennai bore and the heavy rains flooding the major road and neighborhood area of Chennai. It makes huge traffic on the busy city. It damages the power supply of more than 65,000 houses. The Electricity Minister V. Senthil Balaji said that it will be restored within 24 hours. At least 14 people have died in the past 11 days. Besides, it has also disrupted the transport system. Flights are halted for arrivals about six hours, and rail operations are also delayed on Thursday.
The Police of Greater Chennai announced on Friday, that eight roads and seven subways have completely closed due to heavy rain. Over the last two weeks, the heavy rain drowned at least 1.45 lakh acres of agricultural crop and 6000 acres of horticultural crop in Tamil Nadu. Agricultural Minister M. R. K. Panneerselvam said that this is a preliminary estimate. The actual loss will be evaluated after the water recedes.
On Friday actor and politician, Kamal Haasan has visited Velachery, West Mambalam, and many other flood-affected areas in Chennai. He has also provided relief measures to the affected people. The government also assured them to give relief funds.
