New Delhi, March 30, 2026: A major security breach has been exposed at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru after a series of viral videos surfaced, showing inmates enjoying a lifestyle that looks more like a luxury resort than a high-security facility. The footage, which began circulating on Saturday, March 28, 2026, depicts prisoners casually using Android smartphones, streaming movies on Netflix, and discussing the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. This “digital access” has triggered an immediate investigation by the Karnataka Prison Department and left the public shocked by the apparent lack of oversight.

In the clips, inmates are heard making bold claims about their comfort, with one prisoner even suggesting that “anything can be obtained” if the right price is paid. The conversation regarding the IPL was particularly notable, with inmates captured predicting a victory for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and chanting the popular slogan, “Ee sala cup namde” (The cup is ours this time). These videos were reportedly recorded on the night of March 27 and leaked to a regional news portal to showcase the “VIP treatment” being enjoyed behind bars.

Staged Smear Campaign or Systemic Lapse?

Following the leak, an intense internal probe was launched by Director General of Police (Prisons), Alok Kumar. During a targeted search of Barrack Number 9, officials recovered two smartphones that had been ingeniously concealed inside toilet chamber pipes, wrapped tightly in used milk packets to evade detection. However, a dramatic turn has emerged in the investigation, as the accused inmates—identified as Darshan, Abhi, and Zypsin Daniel—reportedly confessed that the videos were staged as part of a deliberate “smear campaign.”

It is argued by prison authorities that the footage was orchestrated to tarnish the reputation of senior officials in retaliation for recently tightened regulations. The prison administration had recently introduced a “barrack-shifting” system based on alphabetical order to break criminal communication links, a move that allegedly angered long-term inmates. Despite the claims of a “setup,” the reality of functional smartphones and active network signals inside the high-security zone has pointed to a undeniable lapse in security.

Suspension of Warders and Signal Jamming Measures

In immediate response to the dereliction of duty, three prison warders—Niranjan Kamath, Hanumantappa Hadpad, and Shivanand Karlabatti—were placed under suspension on Sunday, March 29. Disciplinary action has also been initiated against the supervising jailer. The investigation has revealed that active mobile signals were being accessed from nearby telecom towers, prompting a formal warning to service providers to restrict signal range around the prison perimeter.

The trio of inmates responsible for the videos has been shifted to separate quarantine cells as the Parappana Agrahara Police Station processes a new FIR against them. This incident follows a string of similar controversies at the same jail over the past year, involving birthday celebrations and parties with prohibited items. As of March 30, 2026, the Karnataka government has reiterated its commitment to installing more advanced jammers and CCTV systems to ensure that “Netflix and IPL” remain strictly outside the prison walls.
