New Delhi, january 19, 2026: In a disturbing incident that has ignited a national conversation on moral decay, a 17-year-old student was killed in a road accident in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district, only for the tragedy to be overshadowed by a chilling display of public apathy.

The Incident: A Life Cut Short

On Friday, January 16, 2026, Ritesh Kumar (popularly known as Golu), a Class XI student and son of Santosh Das, was cycling to his morning coaching classes. Near Jhajhihat village, under the jurisdiction of the Pupri police station, a speeding pickup truck carrying a heavy consignment of fish struck the teenager.

The impact was fatal, and Ritesh reportedly died on the spot. As his body lay on the roadside, the pickup van—which had partially overturned or spilled its cargo during the collision—became the center of a chaotic scene.

Apathy Over Humanity

What happened next has shocked the conscience of the public. While Ritesh’s family arrived at the scene, devastated by the loss of their son, dozens of bystanders chose to ignore the lifeless body and the grieving family.

Instead of offering assistance or securing the area for the police, the crowd focused on the spilled fish. Viral footage from the scene shows:

  • Bystanders filling sacks and bags with fish.
  • Individuals rushing past the victim’s body to grab as much cargo as possible.
  • A total lack of urgency to call for medical help or coordinate with local authorities.

Local witnesses described the scene as surreal and heartbreaking, noting that the “loot” seemed to take precedence over human life.

Police Action and Investigation

Upon receiving reports of the accident and the ensuing chaos, personnel from the Pupri Police Station arrived at the spot to disperse the crowd and regain control.

“The victim was on his way to his coaching classes when the accident occurred. We have seized the pickup truck involved, though the driver managed to flee the scene. We are currently tracing him for legal action,” stated Ramshankar Kumar, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Pupri.

The body of the teenager was recovered and sent for a post-mortem examination. While the police are focusing on the hit-and-run aspect of the case, the social media backlash has focused heavily on the behavior of the crowd.

A Reflection of Social Values

This incident follows a series of similar reports from the region where “looting” at accident sites has become a recurring trend. However, the presence of a deceased child makes this particular case especially harrowing.

Sociologists and local leaders have expressed concern over this “normalization of apathy,” where the immediate material gain of a few kilograms of fish outweighed the dignity of a young life lost. As Bihar mourns the death of Ritesh Kumar, the viral videos remain a grim reminder of a collective failure in human empathy.
