Udhampur Bus Tragedy: 15 Dead

April 20, 2026: In a tragic road accident that has sent shockwaves through the region, at least 15 people have been confirmed dead and many others injured after a passenger bus lost control and plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district on Monday morning.

The incident occurred near Kanote village in the Ramnagar area around 10:00 AM, as the bus was traveling from a remote village toward Udhampur. Preliminary reports suggest that the driver lost control while negotiating a sharp, blind curve on the challenging hilly terrain, causing the vehicle to skid off the road and roll down the steep slope.

Immediate Response and Rescue Efforts

The local community, often the first responders in such difficult terrains, immediately rushed to the site upon hearing the crash. Their swift action in navigating the difficult slope allowed for the initial extraction of passengers from the mangled wreckage before professional emergency teams could arrive.

“Just now spoke to DC Udhampur, Minga Sherpa, after learning about the tragic road accident,” the Minister stated in a post on X. “The rescue operation has been immediately undertaken. Heavy casualties are expected. All possible assistance is being provided. The injured are being shifted for medical aid, and arrangements are being made to airlift those in critical condition.”

Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, also expressed profound grief over the loss of lives. In a statement, he said, “The tragic road accident in Udhampur is heartbreaking. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I have directed the district administration, Police, SDRF, and the Health Department to provide every possible assistance to those affected.

Medical Situation

The injured survivors have been rushed to the Government Medical College (GMC) and Associated Hospitals in Udhampur. Medical staff have been placed on high alert to handle the influx of trauma cases. According to Dr. Sanjeev Gupta, Medical Superintendent of GMC Udhampur, the condition of several of the injured remains critical, and doctors are working tirelessly to provide stabilize them.

Efforts to identify the victims and inform their families are currently ongoing, with police setting up a help desk to assist distressed relatives.
