New Delhi, November 21, 2025: A video clip purporting to show South African cricket captain Temba Bavuma delivering a verbal response to the controversial “bauna” jibe has recently achieved viral status online. The footage, which was presented as the cricketer’s official or personal reaction, has now been confirmed by fact-checkers as a piece of sophisticated, AI-generated content.
The original controversy that spawned the fake video was rooted in a stump-mic conversation captured during the first Test between India and South Africa in Kolkata. Indian players, specifically bowler Jasprit Bumrah and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, were allegedly heard using the Hindi word “bauna” (meaning short or dwarf) while discussing a potential Decision Review System (DRS) call against Bavuma. The remark was picked up by the stump microphone and was widely circulated online, where it was criticized by many as an act of casual body-shaming.

The video featuring Bavuma’s supposed “response” was rapidly identified as non-authentic. Detailed analysis of the clip showed irregularities in the mouth movements, facial expressions, and overall visual quality, consistent with those produced by deepfake or AI video synthesis technology. The content, which was clearly designed to exploit the emotional fallout of the original incident, was created by digitally superimposing a new speech track and fabricated facial movements onto a genuine image or silent video of the cricketer. The purpose of the fake video was determined to be the creation of sensational, engagement-driving content.
No official statement regarding the AI video has been released by either Temba Bavuma or the South African cricket management. However, the South African camp had previously addressed the original “bauna” remark, with the batting coach stating that the matter would not be pursued further and that the incident would not affect the series. This professional silence was interpreted by many as a decision to keep the focus strictly on the game, a stance that was then undermined by the spread of the fictitious response video.
The rapid spread and initial acceptance of the fake video are being cited by digital safety experts as a critical example of the escalating crisis of deepfake technology in the sports and media sectors. The ease with which persuasive, yet entirely fabricated, celebrity content can be generated and disseminated was dramatically illustrated. Calls for social media platforms to implement more rigorous detection and flagging mechanisms for AI-generated media have been intensified following this incident.
