New Delhi, 2 august, 2025 :It can be definitively stated that a total solar eclipses will not be observed on August 2nd, 2025. Numerous reports and official confirmations from astronomical agencies, including NASA, have debunked widespread misinformation that had been circulating on social media regarding a global blackout on this date. Instead, a partial solar eclipse is expected to occur on September 21st, 2025, but it will not be visible from India. This celestial event will primarily be visible from regions around Australia, Antarctica, and parts of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

However, a highly anticipated total solar eclipse is indeed scheduled for August 2nd, 2027. This event has been widely referred to as the “Eclipse of the Century” due to its exceptional duration, with totality expected to last for up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds in some locations. This makes it one of the longest land-visible total solar eclipses between 1991 and 2114.

The path of totality for the August 2, 2027, eclipse will predominantly cross parts of Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Countries such as Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia will be situated within the narrow band where the Sun will be completely obscured. Luxor, Egypt, is specifically highlighted as a prime viewing location, where the longest duration of totality will be experienced.

Regarding visibility from India, a partial solar eclipse will be observed on August 2nd, 2027. While a full total eclipse will not be witnessed across the country, various western and northwestern states, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa, will experience the Sun being partially obscured. The extent of this obscuration is expected to range from approximately 10% to 30%, depending on the specific location. The partial eclipse in India is anticipated to occur in the late afternoon, generally between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM IST, though precise timings will vary by city. It should be noted that sunset might limit visibility in some coastal areas, such as Mumbai and Goa.

For safe viewing of the partial solar eclipse in India, the use of certified solar viewing glasses or handheld solar filters will be essential. Direct viewing of the Sun, even during a partial eclipse, can result in permanent eye damage. Astronomical organizations like the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Vigyan Prasar, and the Planetary Society of India are expected to organize public viewing events and live streams to facilitate safe observation of this rare celestial phenomenon. Preparations for scientific observations are also underway, as the extended duration of the 2027 eclipse presents a valuable opportunity for researchers to study the solar corona and other solar phenomena.
