In a landmark visit that has been hailed as a new chapter for the state, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy became the first sitting Chief Minister to address students and faculty at Osmania University since the formation of Telangana in 2014. The visit on Monday, August 25, 2025, held significant symbolic and political weight, as the university has a history of student activism and played a pivotal role in the Telangana statehood movement.

A New Era of Engagement

For nearly a decade, the relationship between the previous state government and Osmania University had been strained, with the former Chief Minister largely staying away from the campus. Students’ grievances, particularly concerning unfulfilled promises of government jobs, fueled a sense of resentment and led to a palpable disconnect. Revanth Reddy’s visit, therefore, is seen as a deliberate and powerful gesture to bridge this gap and connect directly with the state’s youth and intellectual community. He acknowledged the university’s historical significance, calling it the “twin of Telangana” and a place that “teaches struggle along with education.”

Promises and Political Statements

During his speech, the Chief Minister made several key announcements and promises aimed at revitalizing the institution. He inaugurated newly constructed buildings worth an estimated ₹90 crore, including hostels for 1,200 students, and laid the foundation stone for a new digital library. He also announced a new “CM Research Fellowship” to support advanced academic research and a scheme to provide financial assistance for students’ foreign educational trips.

One of the most striking moments of the event was Reddy’s pledge to return to the university in December to hold a public meeting at the Arts College—this time, without any police protection. This bold promise was made in response to criticism over the heavy security presence and the preventive arrests of some student leaders that took place prior to his visit. The Chief Minister also took the opportunity to take a swipe at his political opponents, accusing them of spreading misinformation and attempting to weaken the university.
