A disturbing video showing several street vendors being allegedly forced to perform handstands and sit-ups as a form of ‘punishment’ in a public park in Ayodhya has gone viral, triggering widespread outrage and strong political condemnation. The incident, which unfolded at the city’s Deen Dayal Upadhyay Park, has drawn sharp criticism, with the Congress party labelling the actions seen in the video as “Talibani behaviour.”
The widely circulated video clip captures at least eight men, identified locally as small-scale vendors selling puja items outside the Ram Temple premises, positioned against a wall, struggling to hold a handstand. Two individuals, reportedly personnel in a type of uniform (though the exact department is under investigation), are seen standing over them, in some instances carrying batons, as they pace around the visibly distressed men. The alleged “punishment” was reportedly meted out for setting up their stalls in an unauthorised or prohibited area.
The footage has ignited a firestorm on social media, prompting an immediate official response. The Mayor of Ayodhya has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and ordered a high-level investigation into the incident. The probe has been tasked with identifying the personnel involved and determining the circumstances that led to this humiliating treatment of the vendors. Initial reports from the civic body suggest that at least three employees have been found prima facie guilty of misconduct.
The issue has quickly escalated into a political row. The Congress party, among others, was swift to condemn the actions, using the term “Talibani behaviour” to highlight the perceived cruelty and violation of human dignity. Critics argue that regardless of any violation of municipal laws regarding street vending, forcing citizens into such public humiliation and physical distress is an unacceptable and authoritarian misuse of power, especially against impoverished small-scale entrepreneurs.
A local legislator also strongly denounced the incident, stating that such actions are “not in line with the dignity of Ayodhya” and affirming that the harassment or oppression of small traders, who are the backbone of the local economy, will not be tolerated. The statement further stressed that officials are appointed for public service, not to spread fear or inflict insult, and promised strict action against anyone who is found to have overstepped their authority. Furthermore, a child welfare committee has initiated a separate inquiry, taking into account reports that some minors may be among the victims, with a promise of legal action if the involvement of children is confirmed.
The incident underscores the continuing challenges faced by street vendors in rapidly developing temple towns like Ayodhya, where city beautification and decongestion drives often clash with the livelihoods of the local populace. The viral video has turned the spotlight squarely onto the conduct of enforcement personnel and the need for humane and lawful methods of implementing municipal regulations. The authorities await the full report of the investigation before announcing the final course of action against the erring personnel.
