Monday, April 6, 2026 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather alert for several districts in Uttar Pradesh, predicting widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. As a new Western Disturbance becomes active over North India, residents in major urban centers and rural belts are advised to prepare for a sudden shift in atmospheric conditions.

Key Districts Under Watch

According to the latest bulletin from the Meteorological Centre in Lucknow, the following areas are expected to witness the most intense weather activity:

  • Western UP: Noida, Ghaziabad, Meerut, and Agra.
  • Central & East UP: Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, and Prayagraj.
  • Additional Alerts: Over 50 districts have been placed under varying levels of monitoring for potential hailstorms and squalls.

In Kanpur, weather records have already been shattered this season, with recent rainfall breaking a 55-year-old record for the month of April. The current system is expected to intensify these conditions further.

Weather Phenomenon: Why is it Raining?

The primary driver behind this unseasonal weather is the arrival of two consecutive Western Disturbances. These moisture-laden winds originating from the Mediterranean Sea are interacting with local low-pressure zones, leading to:

  1. Thunderstorms and Lightning: High probability of electrical activity across the plains.
  2. Gusty Winds: Wind speeds are expected to range between 30–50 kmph, potentially causing damage to temporary structures and plantations.
  3. Hailstorm Risk: Isolated pockets in Western UP may experience hailstorms, which pose a significant threat to standing crops.

Impact on Temperature and Agriculture

While the rain offers a temporary reprieve from the rising summer heat, it brings a “bittersweet” relief. Maximum temperatures across the state are expected to drop by 2°C to 4°C over the next 48 hours.

However, the agricultural sector remains on high alert. The IMD has issued a specific advisory for farmers, particularly those in the midst of the wheat harvest.

“Farmers are advised to complete the harvesting and threshing of ripened crops immediately and move the produce to safe, covered locations to avoid losses due to moisture and hailstorms.”

Safety Guidelines for Residents

The administration has urged citizens to follow safety protocols during the storm:

  • Stay Indoors: Avoid being out in the open during lightning and thunder.
  • Seek Safe Shelter: Do not take cover under trees or near tall electric poles, as they are prone to lightning strikes and falling.
  • Commuter Advisory: Motorists should be cautious of reduced visibility and slippery roads during heavy downpours.

Looking Ahead: The IMD suggests that while today will see scattered activity, the intensity of the rain and thunderstorms is likely to peak on April 7 and 8, before the system begins to weaken by the end of the week.
