A spokesperson for Anil Ambani has confirmed that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted a search at his Mumbai residence, as well as at the offices of Reliance Communications Ltd. (RCom). The action was taken after the CBI registered a case based on a complaint from the State Bank of India (SBI), alleging a bank fraud that resulted in a loss of over ₹2,929 crore. The complaint claims that RCom, along with Ambani, engaged in a criminal conspiracy to misrepresent and secure credit facilities from SBI and subsequently diverted the funds.
The CBI’s case is a result of a forensic audit ordered by SBI in 2020, which flagged several alleged irregularities in transactions between April 2013 and March 2017. The audit reportedly found that of the total loans received by RCom and its subsidiaries, a significant portion was used for inter-company transactions, payments to “connected parties,” and other questionable dealings. The CBI’s First Information Report (FIR) accuses the company and its directors of criminal conspiracy, cheating, and criminal breach of trust.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Anil Ambani strongly denied all allegations. They stated that the matter dates back more than a decade and that Ambani was a non-executive director at the time, with no involvement in the company’s day-to-day management. The spokesperson also pointed out that SBI had already withdrawn proceedings against five other non-executive directors in the same matter, and that Ambani has been “selectively singled out.” The statement added that Ambani has challenged SBI’s declaration before the competent judicial forum and will defend himself.
The CBI’s action comes amidst ongoing legal challenges for RCom. The company is currently undergoing a Corporate Insolvency Resolution process under the supervision of a Committee of Creditors led by SBI. The matter is sub judice, pending before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and other judicial forums, including the Supreme Court. Furthermore, this CBI probe follows a separate investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which had also questioned Ambani in a money laundering probe related to another alleged bank loan fraud. The CBI obtained search warrants from a special court in Mumbai on August 22, 2025, and conducted the searches two days later.
