In a significant move that will bring a festive cheer to prospective car buyers, Mahindra & Mahindra has announced a substantial price reduction on its popular SUV, the Thar Roxx. The price cut, which goes up to Rs 1.33 lakh, is a direct result of the recent GST rate rationalization on certain categories of vehicles. This decision by the company to pass on the full benefits of the tax revision is expected to significantly boost sales of the lifestyle off-roader, especially ahead of the crucial festive season.
The GST Council, in a recent meeting, revised the tax structure on a range of automobiles. For large SUVs like the Thar Roxx, which measure over four meters in length and have an engine capacity exceeding 1,500cc, the tax slab has been reduced from the previous 48% (comprising 28% GST and 20% compensation cess) to a flat 40%. This 8% reduction in the total tax liability is what Mahindra is now extending to its customers.
While the official implementation date for the new GST rates is September 22, Mahindra has taken a proactive step by making the revised prices effective from September 6. This early adoption of the new rates demonstrates a customer-centric approach and gives Mahindra a head start in the market. Other major automakers like Tata Motors and Toyota have also announced similar price cuts across their respective portfolios, signaling a widespread benefit for the Indian consumer.
The price reduction varies across different variants of the Thar Roxx, with the higher-end trims seeing the most significant benefits. The entry-level MX1 variant, for instance, has a price reduction of Rs 81,200. The mid-range MX3 variant is now cheaper by Rs 1.01 lakh, while the AX3L sees a price cut of Rs 98,300. The MX5 variant, a popular choice among buyers, now offers a saving of Rs 1.10 lakh.
The most substantial price drop is on the top-spec AX7L variant, which is now more affordable by a whopping Rs 1.33 lakh. This makes the fully-loaded Thar Roxx a more compelling proposition for those looking for a rugged and feature-packed SUV.
Here is a quick look at the variant-wise price reductions:
This strategic move by Mahindra is well-timed, as it coincides with the festive season, a period when consumer spending on big-ticket items like cars typically spikes. The more accessible pricing is expected to drive strong sales momentum for the Thar Roxx, reinforcing its position as a dominant player in the lifestyle SUV segment. The price cut not only makes the Thar Roxx more affordable but also intensifies competition in the segment, benefiting the end consumer with more value for their money.
