In a significant development poised to reshape India’s burgeoning fuel retail landscape, Adani Total Gas Ltd (ATGL) and Jio-bp (the operating brand of Reliance BP Mobility Ltd) have announced a pioneering partnership. This strategic collaboration will see the two energy giants integrating their offerings, with select ATGL outlets retailing Jio-bp’s high-performance petrol and diesel, while designated Jio-bp fuel stations will incorporate ATGL’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) dispensing units within ATGL’s authorized Geographical Areas (GAs).

This innovative tie-up marks a pivotal moment for both companies and promises substantial benefits for Indian consumers. By leveraging each other’s extensive infrastructure, Adani Total Gas and Jio-bp aim to enhance the availability of a comprehensive range of quality fuels, improve customer experience, and accelerate the nation’s transition towards a diversified energy mix.

A Synergistic Partnership

The core of this agreement lies in its synergistic approach. Adani Total Gas, a joint venture between the Adani Group and France’s TotalEnergies, boasts a robust network of approximately 650 CNG stations across India. As a leading city gas distribution (CGD) player, ATGL is instrumental in supplying natural gas to households, industries, commercial establishments, and the rapidly growing transport sector. Beyond CNG, ATGL is also actively involved in compressed biogas (CBG), electric vehicle (EV) charging, and LNG for transportation.

On the other hand, Jio-bp, a joint venture between Reliance Industries Ltd and the UK’s energy major bp, commands a significant presence in liquid fuel retailing with around 2,000 outlets nationwide. Jio-bp is known for its “ACTIVE” technology fuels (petrol and diesel), designed to enhance engine performance and efficiency, and is actively expanding its mobility solutions, including EV charging and modern convenience stores.

The partnership effectively bridges the existing strengths of both entities. Consumers visiting select ATGL stations will now have access to Jio-bp’s premium petrol and diesel, expanding their choices for liquid fuels. Conversely, Jio-bp outlets within ATGL’s GAs will become one-stop destinations for motorists seeking CNG, offering greater convenience and accessibility to a cleaner fuel option.

Enhanced Customer Experience and Market Impact

Industry experts believe this collaboration will have a profound impact on the Indian fuel retail sector, which has historically been dominated by public sector oil marketing companies. The combined might of Adani Total Gas and Jio-bp, two of India’s largest private energy players, is expected to intensify competition, leading to improved service standards and a more diverse range of offerings for consumers.

Suresh P. Manglani, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Adani Total Gas Ltd, emphasized the shared vision behind the partnership, stating, “This partnership will enable us to leverage each other’s infrastructure, thus enhancing customer experience and offerings.” Echoing this sentiment, Sarthak Behuria, Chairman of Jio-bp, highlighted the commitment to “delivering an exceptional customer experience,” and how the alliance allows them to “leverage each other’s strengths to further enhance the value we provide to India.”

This agreement encompasses both existing and future outlets of both partners, signaling a long-term commitment to expanding their integrated fuel network. For consumers, this translates into:

  • Increased Convenience: Access to a wider range of fuels (petrol, diesel, and CNG) at a greater number of locations.
  • Quality Assurance: Availability of high-performance liquid fuels from Jio-bp and reliable CNG supply from ATGL.
  • Enhanced Choice: More options in the private fuel retail space, fostering competition and potentially leading to better services and value.

The partnership also aligns with India’s broader energy transition goals, promoting cleaner fuel options like CNG and contributing to a more sustainable transportation ecosystem. As both companies continue to innovate and expand their offerings, this alliance is set to play a crucial role in shaping the future of mobility in India.
