New Delhi, November 11, 2025: South Indian actress Anupama Parameswaran has taken a firm stand against cybercrime, initiating legal proceedings after a spate of morphed photos and baseless allegations targeting her circulated widely across social media platforms. The actress, known for her roles in Malayalam, Telugu, and Tamil cinema, disclosed the deeply distressing incident on her social media, revealing that the Kerala Cyber Crime Police have successfully traced the perpetrator to a young woman.

The Disturbing Incident

In a detailed public statement, Anupama Parameswaran described encountering an Instagram account that was actively sharing “extremely inappropriate and false content” not just about her, but also involving her family and tagging her co-actors and friends. The malicious campaign was primarily fueled by morphed pictures coupled with unsubstantiated accusations, creating a targeted and highly distressing environment of online harassment.

Further investigation by the actress revealed that the same individual was behind multiple fake accounts, all operating with the singular, malicious intent to “spread hate” and defame her public image. This coordinated attack highlighted the severe and often systematic nature of cyberbullying faced by public figures.

Swift Action by Cyber Crime Police

Responding immediately to the harassment, Anupama Parameswaran filed a formal complaint with the Kerala Cyber Crime Police. She praised their prompt and efficient response, which quickly led to the identification of the person responsible for the malicious online activity.

The investigation uncovered that the person behind the various fake accounts and the circulation of the morphed content was a 20-year-old woman from Tamil Nadu. This revelation underscores the reality that such sophisticated online harassment can often originate from unexpected sources.

A Compassionate Yet Firm Response

Despite the trauma inflicted by the cyberbully, the actress made a notable and compassionate decision regarding the perpetrator’s identity.

“To my surprise, it turned out to be a 20-year-old girl from Tamil Nadu. Considering her young age, I have chosen not to disclose her identity, as I do not wish to compromise her future or peace of mind,” Anupama stated.

However, while choosing restraint on revealing the individual’s name, Anupama made it unequivocally clear that legal action will proceed. She stressed the importance of accountability in the digital sphere, issuing a strong warning to others who might engage in similar activities.

“Owning a smartphone or having access to social media platforms does not give anyone the right to harass, defame, or spread hatred against others… Every action online leaves a trace, and accountability will follow,” she asserted, adding, “Being an actor or a public figure doesn’t strip away basic rights. Cyberbullying is a punishable offence—and accountability is real.”

Broader Implications of Cyberbullying

Anupama Parameswaran’s courage in coming forward and pursuing legal recourse shines a necessary spotlight on the pervasive issue of cyberbullying and online harassment, particularly against women in the public eye. Her decision to protect the identity of her young harasser while still ensuring legal consequences are faced has garnered widespread support, turning a personal ordeal into a powerful message about empathy, digital responsibility, and the real-world impact of online actions.

The ongoing legal action serves as a strong reminder that the digital space is not anonymous and that spreading defamatory content, especially through illegal manipulation of images, carries severe legal consequences.
