A day of deep spiritual devotion turned into an unimaginable tragedy in Barnala district, Punjab, when a 59-year-old woman, observing the auspicious Karva Chauth fast for the longevity of her husband, collapsed and died of a cardiac arrest moments before breaking her vrat (fast). The heart-wrenching incident, which occurred in the Tapa town, was partially captured on video, showing the woman’s final, joyous moments of celebration.
The deceased, identified as Asha Rani, a respected figure from a socially active family in Tapa Mandi, had spent the entire day observing the traditional Nirjala Vrat, abstaining from both food and water as is customary for married Hindu women praying for their spouse’s well-being.
The tragedy unfolded on Sunday evening as women in the neighbourhood gathered to celebrate, a traditional custom before sighting the moon and concluding the fast. Relatives reported that Asha Rani, dressed in festive attire, was dancing enthusiastically with other women to Punjabi music played on a DJ system. Visuals from the event show her enjoying the festivities, immersed in the dance, just moments before she suddenly lost her balance and collapsed on the floor.
Eyewitnesses recounted the suddenness of the event, noting that the group was dancing to a popular Punjabi song with lyrics translating to, “Enjoy yourself, we don’t know what may happen tomorrow morning,” a cruel irony given the swift and fatal turn of events.
The celebratory atmosphere instantly gave way to panic. Her husband, Tarsem Lal, and other family members immediately rushed Asha Rani to a nearby hospital. She was later referred to Barnala, where doctors tragically declared her dead, confirming the cause of death as cardiac arrest.
The sudden demise of Asha Rani on a day dedicated to her husband’s life and health has plunged her family and the entire community into shock and grief. The tragic event underscores the unpredictable nature of health emergencies, particularly heart-related ailments, which have seen a worrying rise across various demographics. The video clip of her final dance remains a poignant and painful memory for the grieving family, encapsulating the joy of the last moments of her life, celebrated in devotion. Community leaders and neighbours have expressed their profound sorrow and extended their condolences to the bereaved family.
