Feb 10, 2026 — In a major development for one of the year’s most anticipated cinematic releases, the Madras High Court has permitted KVN Productions to withdraw their writ petition regarding the certification of the film Jana Nayagan. The move effectively shifts the battleground from the courtroom back to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), paving the way for the film’s eventual release.
The film, starring actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay, has been mired in legal and procedural delays for over a month, frustrating fans and stakeholders in the Tamil film industry.
On Tuesday, Justice P.T. Asha dismissed the petition as withdrawn after the producers expressed their intent to cooperate with the CBFC’s internal review process. Representing KVN Productions, counsel Vijayan Subramanian submitted a letter to the High Court Registry stating that the production house had decided to accept the CBFC Chairman’s decision to refer the movie to a Revising Committee.
This decision follows a rocky legal timeline:
The controversy began in late December 2025. While the initial five-member Examining Committee recommended a U/A certificate with specific cuts, a subsequent internal complaint from an Advisory Panel Member halted the process.
The objections centered on two sensitive areas:
Following these objections, CBFC Chairman Prasoon Joshi exercised his power to refer the film to a nine-member Revising Committee for a fresh evaluation.
Initially slated for a grand Pongal release on January 9, Jana Nayagan missed its window due to the standoff. With the legal hurdles now removed, the Revising Committee will conduct a fresh screening to decide whether the film deserves a U, U/A, or A rating.
Industry insiders suggest the makers are now eyeing a late February 2026 release. However, an official announcement is expected only after the physical certificate is handed over by the board.
The stakes for Jana Nayagan are exceptionally high, as it is widely marketed as Vijay’s final film before he transitions into full-time politics with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Directed by H. Vinoth and featuring an ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Mamitha Baiju, the film’s soundtrack by Anirudh Ravichander has already become a chart-topping success.
For the millions of “Thalapathy” fans, the withdrawal of the court case is seen as a strategic move to ensure the film hits theaters without further “legal lock-ins,” even if it means adhering to additional cuts suggested by the board.
