New Delhi, April 11, 2026: Actor Raima Sen, a celebrated name in both Bengali and Hindi cinema, is making headlines as she prepares for her next significant chapter in Bollywood. In a candid recent conversation, the actor reflected on the evolution of her career, the competitive nature of the Mumbai film industry, and why she has adopted a more flexible approach toward choosing projects in Bollywood compared to her work in regional cinema.

The Reality of Competition in Bollywood

Despite being part of a legendary film lineage—as the granddaughter of the iconic Suchitra Sen and daughter of Moon Moon Sen—Raima has always been vocal about the unique challenges of the Hindi film industry.

Speaking about her professional strategy for her “comeback” phase, Raima admitted that the sheer scale of competition in Bollywood necessitates a different mindset.

“I cannot be too choosy with roles here as there is too much competition in this industry compared to regional ones like the Bengali industry,” she shared.

While she has the luxury of being highly selective in Tollywood (Kolkata), where she is a top-tier star with a vast body of work, she views Bollywood as a space where staying active and visible is crucial.

Reflecting on Her Journey: From ‘Godmother’ to ‘Family Business’

Raima made her debut 26 years ago in the critically acclaimed film Godmother (1999). Since then, she has delivered memorable performances in films like Parineeta, Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., and Chokher Bali. However, after her 2022 Netflix series Mai, she experienced a brief hiatus from Hindi screens.

She is currently gearing up for a major role in Hansal Mehta’s upcoming project, reportedly titled Family Business, which also stars Anil Kapoor and Vijay Varma. For Raima, this isn’t just about a “comeback” but about maturing as an artist.

  • Growth Over Time: Raima noted that while she was “all over the place” in her youth, accepting whatever came her way, she now feels more responsible and grounded.
  • The Weight of Legacy: She acknowledged the initial pressure of being compared to her grandmother but expressed that she has finally carved out her own identity as “Raima.”

Addressing Favouritism and “Survival of the Fittest”

In an era where nepotism is a constant topic of debate, Raima offered a balanced perspective. While she acknowledges that her family legacy might help in securing an initial meeting or a first chance, she insists that it does not guarantee longevity.

“The fact is, only the fittest survives,” she asserted. According to her, while a legacy can “fetch you work,” the ultimate survival in the industry depends on how an actor utilizes those opportunities and proves their talent to the audience.

Navigating Lost Projects and Future Hopes

Raima also touched upon the “painful” aspect of the industry—films that are completed but never see the light of day. She specifically mentioned a project titled Raakh, directed by Tanuja Chandra and co-starring Vir Das and Rajeev Khandelwal, which remains unreleased despite the completion of dubbing.

As she moves forward, Raima’s focus remains on staying engaged with the craft. Between her upcoming Hindi films and Bengali thrillers like Chaalchitro, the actor is proving that her adaptability is her greatest strength. By choosing to prioritize good work over a rigid “lead-only” criteria, she is ensuring her presence remains felt in the ever-evolving landscape of Indian cinema.
