The simmering tensions between Bollywood actor Harshvardhan Rane and Pakistani actress Mawra Hocane, his co-star from the 2016 film Sanam Teri Kasam, have escalated into a full-blown social media feud. This comes in the wake of Rane’s decision to step away from the potential sequel, citing Hocane’s critical remarks about India’s recent military action, Operation Sindoor.

The controversy ignited when Mawra Hocane took to social media to condemn India’s operation, labeling it a “cowardly attack.” This strongly worded criticism drew a sharp response from Harshvardhan Rane, who, while expressing respect for artists globally, asserted his unwavering stance against any derogatory comments directed at his nation. He subsequently announced his decision to not be a part of Sanam Teri Kasam 2 if Hocane remained in the cast.

Mawra Hocane, clearly displeased by Rane’s stance and its public announcement, retorted with a scathing remark accusing him of using the situation as a “PR strategy.” In a lengthy social media post, she expressed her disappointment, stating, “Someone I expected to have basic common sense has risen from deep slumber with a PR strategy. While our nations are at war, this is what you come up with? A PR statement to get attention? What a pity!” She further criticized the timing of his announcement, deeming it “shameful and bizarre” to discuss films amidst the volatile situation between the two nuclear-armed nations. Hocane also accused Rane of exploiting the conflict for personal gain and headlines after nine years since their film’s release.

Responding to Mawra’s “PR strategy” remark, Harshvardhan Rane didn’t hold back. Taking to his Instagram Stories on Sunday, he delivered a firm rejoinder, stating, “That sounded like an attempt at personal attack. Fortunately, I have tolerance to overlook such attempts – but have zero tolerance for any attack on my nation’s dignity.”

Drawing a parallel to a farmer’s work, Rane metaphorically explained his decision: “An Indian farmer would pluck out the unwanted weed from his crop its called WEEDING, the farmer doesnt need a PR team for this act, its called common sense. I simply offered to step down from Part 2. I am fully within my rights to choose not to work with individuals who label my country’s actions as ‘cowardly’.”

In a pointed remark addressing the tone of Hocane’s message, Rane expressed his disappointment, saying, “So much hate in her speech, so many personal remarks. I never mentioned her name or resorted to calling her names. Didn’t attack her dignity as a woman. I intend to maintain that standard.”

The exchange has rapidly gained traction on social media, dividing fans and sparking discussions about the intersection of art, nationalism, and political tensions between India and Pakistan. While some are lauding Harshvardhan Rane for his patriotic stance, others are lamenting the increasing impact of political conflicts on artistic collaborations.

The directors of Sanam Teri Kasam, Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, have also reportedly sided with Harshvardhan Rane, echoing his sentiments regarding the current political climate and cross-border collaborations.

With the lead actors seemingly at loggerheads and the directors also expressing their displeasure, the future of Sanam Teri Kasam 2 hangs in the balance, leaving fans of the original film uncertain about the possibility of a reunion. The controversy serves as a stark reminder of how geopolitical tensions can spill over into the entertainment industry, impacting relationships and future projects.
