New Delhi, February 5, 2026: The Telugu film and television industry is mourning the loss of veteran actress Vahini (also known as Jaya Vahini or Padma), who passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. She was 48 years old. Her death has highlighted the harsh realities faced by many supporting artists in the entertainment world, as she reportedly struggled with severe financial difficulties while battling a terminal illness.
Born in 1978 in Vizianagaram, Vahini entered the industry at a young age, fueled by a passion for acting. Over a career spanning more than 25 years, she became a recognizable face in both Telugu and Tamil cinema and television.
Vahini’s life took a difficult turn when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. As her health deteriorated, the cost of treatment became an insurmountable burden. Reports indicate that medical expenses, including ICU care and chemotherapy, were estimated to be between ₹25 lakh and ₹35 lakh.
Despite her years in the industry, Vahini lacked the personal funds to cover these exorbitant costs. Her close friend and colleague, actress Karate Kalyani, took to social media late last year to appeal to the film fraternity and the public for financial aid. While some donors and industry members stepped forward to help, the disease had already reached an advanced stage, leading to multi-organ complications.
In her final days, when doctors informed the family that further treatment might not be effective, Vahini was moved from a private hospital in Hyderabad to her birthplace in Vizianagaram. She breathed her last there on Wednesday evening.
Karate Kalyani shared a heartbreaking post confirming the news:
“We tried very hard to save Vahini Akka (Padmakka), but we couldn’t. She reached the Almighty in her birthplace. We will miss you dearly.”
The news of her passing has sparked a wave of tributes from the Tollywood community. Many actors and fans have expressed their grief, remembering her as a dedicated artist and a kind-hearted individual. Her story serves as a somber reminder of the need for better financial security and healthcare support for veteran and supporting artists in the Indian film industry.
