New Delhi, March 30, 2026: In a harrowing incident that struck Northeast Delhi’s Chand Bagh area, a massive fire broke out in a multi-storey residential building during the early hours of Sunday, March 29, 2026. The blaze, which began in the dead of night, left several residents trapped and forced others to take desperate measures to save their lives.
The emergency call was received by the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) at approximately 2:30 AM. According to officials, the fire originated in the ground-floor parking area of a residential building in F Block, Gali No. 23, Chand Bagh, near Bhajanpura.
Thick, acrid smoke rapidly surged through the building’s narrow staircase—the only exit for residents—effectively turning the structure into a chimney. Panic ensued as families woke up to the smell of burning rubber and the sound of crackling flames.
As the fire intensified and smoke choked the upper floors, four individuals on the first floor found themselves cornered with no way out. In a moment of sheer desperation, they jumped from the first-floor balcony to the street below.
Those who leaped to safety included:
Neighbors and witnesses describe a scene of pure terror. “We heard screams and saw smoke billowing out,” said one local resident. “People were shouting for them to jump. We tried to spread out blankets and sheets to catch them.”
The four individuals were rushed to Jag Pravesh Chand Hospital. Fortunately, they sustained only minor injuries and were discharged after receiving first aid.
The Delhi Fire Service responded with a massive deployment, eventually sending 11 fire tenders to the scene. The operation was complicated by the building’s compact structure and the density of the locality.
While four had already jumped, eight other residents remained trapped on the second, third, and fourth floors. Firefighters, led by Assistant Divisional Officer Deepak Hooda and Station Officer Anoop Singh, used specialized equipment, including a turntable ladder, to reach the upper storeys.
The DFS successfully evacuated four more individuals from the smoke-filled floors:
The fire was eventually doused by 3:50 AM, followed by extensive cooling operations to ensure the structural integrity of the charred building.
Preliminary findings suggest the fire was sparked by two scooters and a motorcycle parked on the ground floor. It is suspected that an electrical short circuit in one of the vehicles may have ignited the fuel, though a formal investigation by the Dayalpur Police and DFS is ongoing to confirm the exact cause.
