New Delhi, july 1, 2026: A horrific road accident on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway claimed at least eight lives and left more than 20 others injured in the early hours of Wednesday, July 1, 2026. The tragedy unfolded when a double-decker private sleeper bus rammed into a moving truck from behind, plunging into a roadside gorge before bursting into violent flames.

The accident took place between 2:30 AM and 3:30 AM near Dhanawda, falling under the jurisdiction of the Kolwa Police Station in Rajasthan’s Dausa district. The bus, operated by Indore-based Hans Travels, was carrying approximately 37 passengers and was en route from Rishikesh/Haridwar in Uttarakhand to Indore in Madhya Pradesh.

Midnight Chaos in Deep Sleep

According to local authorities and survivors, the majority of the passengers were fast asleep when the collision happened. The impact of the crash was so severe that passengers sleeping on the upper berths were violently thrown onto the floor, causing immediate, traumatic injuries.

Moments after the crash, the bus careened off the expressway and fell into a roadside ditch. Almost instantly, a massive fire broke out in the rear portion of the vehicle and rapidly engulfed the entire bus, leaving the trapped passengers in total darkness and panic.

Dausa Superintendent of Police (SP) Piyush Dixit confirmed the nature of the casualties, stating.

Braving the Flames: Survival and Rescue Operations

As smoke filled the cabin, absolute panic ensued. A few alert passengers managed to smash the glass windows of the bus and leap to safety before the fire blocked the exits. Around 24 passengers were successfully pulled out or managed to escape the burning wreckage on their own.

Anita Soni, a surviving passenger who witnessed the ordeal, recounted the terrifying moments.

Upon receiving the alert, emergency response teams, including local police, fire brigade personnel, and the district administration, rushed to the spot. Highway patrol and local villagers joined hands to pull the injured out of the ditch and away from the intense heat of the blazing vehicles. Firefighters battled the flames for hours before bringing the inferno under control, but by then, the bus had been reduced to a skeletal iron frame.

Medical Response and Official Statement

The injured passengers, including several women and children, were immediately rushed via a fleet of ambulances to the Dausa District Hospital. Medical staff were put on high alert to handle the sudden influx of trauma patients. While the condition of many survivors has been stabilized, several critically injured passengers suffering from severe burns and head trauma have been referred to higher medical centers in Jaipur for advanced care.

Dr. Saumya Jha, the District Collector and District Magistrate of Dausa, visited the hospital early in the morning to oversee the medical arrangements.

Ongoing Investigation into the Cause

The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is designed for high-speed transit with strict safety regulations, making this disaster a major focal point for highway authorities. The police have impounded the remains of both the bus and the trailer truck to piece together what caused the crash.

Preliminary findings suggest that the bus driver may have lost control due to high speed or a sudden bout of sleep deprivation—often referred to as ‘highway hypnosis’—which is common during late-night and early-morning long-distance travel. Investigators are also looking into whether the truck pulled any sudden maneuvers or if the bus suffered a mechanical failure, such as brake malfunction, prior to the impact.

Traffic on the specific stretch of the expressway was temporarily diverted for a few hours to clear the charred debris and ensure structural safety, but normal movement has since been restored. High-level inquiries are expected to follow to determine compliance with speed limits and night-driving regulations for commercial passenger buses.
