Gurugram was struck by a devastating road tragedy early on Saturday morning, as a high-speed Mahindra Thar SUV violently crashed into a highway divider on the Delhi-Jaipur National Highway (NH-48), resulting in the death of five young occupants and leaving one person in critical condition.
The catastrophic accident occurred around 4:30 AM near the Jharsa Flyover, specifically at Exit 9 of the National Highway, a busy corridor connecting Delhi and Jaipur. According to Gurugram Police, the black Thar, reportedly carrying three men and three women, was travelling at an excessive speed. The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle while attempting to take the exit, leading to the SUV slamming into the central divider with tremendous force.
The impact of the collision was so severe that four of the six passengers died instantly on the spot. The vehicle was left in a mangled, unrecognizable state, with debris scattered across a wide area of the highway. Police and emergency services rushed to the scene. The two survivors were immediately extracted from the wreckage and transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. Tragically, one of the injured victims later succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, bringing the death toll to five. The sole survivor of the crash remains in critical condition and is undergoing intensive treatment.
Initial reports indicate that the group of six passengers had travelled from Uttar Pradesh to Gurugram for work-related reasons. While the full identities of all the deceased are still being formally established, police have begun the process of identifying the victims, some of whom are believed to be residents of the Noida and Agra areas of Uttar Pradesh.
Authorities have registered a case of rash and negligent driving and have initiated a detailed investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the crash. The tragedy has once again highlighted grave concerns regarding overspeeding and poor road safety practices on busy national highways and expressway exits. Police are examining the site and the wreckage to gather evidence, and further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
