New Delhi, january 02, 2026: A shocking incident of violence against law enforcement has surfaced from Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district, where an on-duty woman constable was brutally assaulted, stripped, and filmed by a mob during an anti-mining protest. The incident, which took place in the Tamnar block on December 27, 2025, came to light after a disturbing video of the assault went viral on social media, sparking widespread national outrage and political condemnation.

The Flashpoint of Violence

The violence erupted at the Jindal Coal Handling Plant (CHP) chowk in Libra village. For nearly two weeks, residents from 14 surrounding villages had been staging a sit-in protest against the proposed Gare Pelma Sector-1 coal block. The protesters were demanding the cancellation of a public hearing held on December 8, which they alleged was “fake” and conducted without genuine community consent.

On the morning of December 27, tensions reached a breaking point when police moved in to clear a road blockade that had halted coal transportation for days. According to official reports, the crowd—which swelled from 300 to over 1,000—turned violent, pelting stones and sticks at security forces.

A Horrifying Assault Captured on Camera

While several police personnel were injured and vehicles were torched, the most harrowing aspect of the clash involved a woman constable who became separated from her unit.

The viral footage shows the constable fallen on the ground in an open field, surrounded by men. In the video, she is seen weeping and pleading with folded hands, addressing her attackers as “brothers” and begging for mercy. Despite her cries, two men are seen heckling her, questioning her presence, and tearing her uniform. One man is heard threatening to beat her with a sandal while another continues to film the assault with a mobile phone.

“Brother, please let me go. I will not do anything. I did not hit anyone. I was only doing my duty,” the constable is heard pleading in the footage.

This was not the only attack on female officers that day; earlier reports and videos also showed Tamnar Station House Officer (SHO) Kamla Pusam being kicked and assaulted by a group of protesters until she fainted.

Police Action and Legal Charges

The Raigarh police have confirmed the arrest of two primary suspects, both identified as local residents, following the emergence of the digital evidence.

Inspector General of Police (Bilaspur Range), Sanjeev Shukla, stated that the accused have been booked under several stringent sections, including:

  • Molestation
  • Attempt to murder
  • Looting
  • Obstructing a public servant from discharging duty

Authorities are currently using the viral footage and other digital evidence to identify more individuals involved in the assault and the subsequent arson, which saw a police bus, a jeep, and an ambulance set ablaze.

Political Fallout and Security Concerns

The incident has triggered a fierce political battle in Chhattisgarh. The All India Mahila Congress, which shared the video, slammed the ruling BJP government, questioning the state of women’s safety if even uniformed officers are not secure.

Conversely, local activist groups and the Chhattisgarh Bachao Andolan termed the violence “unfortunate” but blamed the administration’s “forceful” tactics and the detention of protest leaders for triggering the mob’s anger. They also cited an incident where a local villager was allegedly injured by a coal-transporting vehicle as the final trigger for the riot.

Current Situation

While the situation in Tamnar remains tense, a heavy police presence of over 200 personnel has been deployed to maintain order. In a bid to de-escalate, the Raigarh administration recently announced that it has initiated the process to cancel the controversial public hearing that sparked the fortnight-long protest.
