The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) campus is reeling from the tragic death of a fourth-year student from Delhi, who reportedly fell from the terrace of a hostel building in the early hours of Saturday. The incident has sent shockwaves through the prestigious institution and prompted a police investigation.

The deceased student has been identified as Rohit Sinha, a 22-year-old (some reports state 26-year-old) native of Delhi, who was pursuing a Bachelor of Technology degree in Metallurgical Engineering and Material Science. The incident occurred around 2:30 AM at Hostel 17 on the Powai campus.

According to preliminary reports from the Mumbai Police, Sinha was rushed to a nearby hospital immediately after the fall, where he was declared dead upon arrival. Authorities have registered an accidental death report (ADR) and have initiated a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

While some initial reports suggested a possible suicide, police officials have stated that no suicide note was found at the scene. Statements are being recorded from fellow students who were with Sinha on Friday night. Reports indicate that Sinha and some friends had gathered, ordered food, and later went to the terrace. While others left, Sinha remained behind. One hostel mate reportedly witnessed the fall while on the terrace talking on his phone.

The incident has brought renewed attention to the mental well-being of students in demanding academic environments. The Supreme Court recently highlighted the distressing statistics of student suicides across India, emphasizing a “systemic failure” that cannot be ignored. The court had issued guidelines to address issues such as psychological distress, academic pressure, and institutional insensitivity.

The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination, and Sinha’s family in Delhi has been informed of the tragic news. The IIT Bombay administration has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.

As the investigation continues, the IIT Bombay community mourns the loss of a young life, and many are hoping for greater support systems to address the immense pressure faced by students in higher education.
