New Delhi, january 19, 2026: India is set to enter a new era of rail travel as the country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train begins its commercial operations on January 22, 2026. Flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a high-profile ceremony on January 17, the train is designed to offer a premium, “airline-like” experience for overnight travelers.
Operating on the Howrah (Kolkata) to Kamakhya (Guwahati) route, this semi-high-speed train aims to replace the traditional experience of Rajdhani Express with modern technology, enhanced safety, and world-class comfort.

The train provides a vital link between North Bengal, the Northeast, and the capital of West Bengal, serving thousands of students, traders, and pilgrims.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is scheduled to complete the journey in approximately 14 hours, making it the fastest train on this corridor.
The ticket prices are inclusive of catering services, which feature regional delicacies (Assamese cuisine for trains from Kamakhya and Bengali dishes for those from Howrah).
