New Delhi, August 1, 2025: Karun Nair provided a much-needed anchor for India’s innings on a challenging, rain-affected Day 1 of the fifth Test against England at The Oval. He battled through testing conditions to score his first half-century since his monumental triple ton in 2016, leading India to 204/6 at stumps. His gritty unbeaten 52 offers India a glimmer of hope after an eventful day where England’s pacers largely dominated and recurring rain interruptions plagued play.
The day began under gloomy skies, with England’s stand-in captain Ollie Pope winning the toss and electing to bowl first on a green pitch. The decision immediately paid dividends as England’s new-look pace attack, featuring Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue, exploited the overhead conditions with impressive swing and seam. India’s top order struggled to counter the movement, losing wickets at regular intervals. Yashasvi Jaiswal fell early, trapped plumb in front by Atkinson, setting a tense tone for the visitors. KL Rahul followed soon after, bowled by Chris Woakes, leaving India in a precarious position.
India needed someone to stem the flow of wickets, and Sai Sudharsan, along with skipper Shubman Gill, attempted to rebuild the innings. Sudharsan displayed admirable patience, compiling a resilient 38 runs, but Josh Tongue eventually produced a jaffa that squared him up, finding the outside edge and sending him back to the pavilion. Gill, who had looked fluent at times, then suffered a frustrating run-out, a misjudgment of a quick single costing him his wicket for 21. His dismissal left India reeling and heightened the pressure on the incoming batsmen. Ravindra Jadeja also departed cheaply, a sharp delivery from Tongue finding his outside edge, leaving India’s middle order exposed.

However, Karun Nair, making a crucial return to the playing XI, stepped up to the challenge. He arrived at the crease with India in considerable trouble and immediately displayed a calm temperament. Nair showcased his renowned technique, playing the ball late and with soft hands, effectively negating England’s swing and seam. He patiently accumulated runs, punishing loose deliveries while showing immense discipline against the good ones. This innings held particular significance for Nair, marking his first Test fifty in 3149 days, a stark reminder of the long and arduous journey he has undertaken since his record-breaking 303 not out against the same opposition almost nine years ago.
As the day progressed, Washington Sundar joined Nair, and the pair forged a vital unbeaten 51-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Sundar provided excellent support, displaying his own resolute defense and occasionally finding the boundary. Their partnership ensured India did not collapse completely, providing some stability towards the end of a chaotic day. Notably, during their stand, a moment of sportsmanship shone through as Karun Nair refrained from taking a fourth run after Chris Woakes injured his shoulder attempting to save a boundary. Nair’s thoughtful gesture earned widespread praise, embodying the true spirit of cricket.
Despite the persistent rain interruptions, which saw play delayed and sessions shortened, 64 overs were possible. England’s bowlers, particularly Gus Atkinson (2/31) and Josh Tongue (2/47), capitalized on the conditions, but their inconsistency in line and length allowed India to accumulate runs in patches. The hosts will undoubtedly feel they could have made greater inroads, especially given the helpful conditions.
As stumps were called, Karun Nair remained unbeaten on 52 runs from 98 deliveries, a knock punctuated by seven fours. Washington Sundar will resume on Day 2 on 19 not out. India still face a significant task to post a competitive total, with only the tailenders remaining. They will rely heavily on Nair and Sundar to extend their partnership and push the score closer to the 300-run mark, which their assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate believes would represent a “great score” on this pitch. With the series finely poised at 2-1 in England’s favor, Day 2 promises another enthralling chapter in this captivating Test match.
