Tragedy struck a Krishna Janmashtami procession in Hyderabad’s Ramanthapur area, as an electrical accident claimed the lives of five men and left four others injured. The incident, which occurred late on Sunday night, has cast a pall of gloom over the festival celebrations.

The Tragic Incident

The mishap happened during a “Shobha Yatra” (procession) where a decorated chariot was being moved by a group of devotees. According to police reports, the vehicle transporting the chariot stalled, and around ten people began to push it manually to continue the procession. It was during this effort that the top of the chariot came into contact with an overhead live electric wire, causing a devastating electric shock.

The five deceased, who were among those pushing the chariot, were identified as Krishna alias Diamond Yadav (21), Srikanth Reddy (35), Suresh Yadav (34), Rudra Vikas (39), and Rajendra Reddy (45). The impact of the electric shock was immediate and fatal for them. The four injured individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.

Investigation and Response

Local police from the Uppal police station swiftly responded to the scene, shifting the bodies of the deceased to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem examinations. They have initiated a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the exact circumstances and any potential lapses in safety protocols. Authorities are looking into whether the procession had the necessary permissions and if any safety guidelines regarding overhead power lines were overlooked.

The tragic event has prompted an outpouring of grief and condolences from political leaders and the community. The Chief Minister and other ministers have expressed their deep shock and have assured that the injured will receive the best possible medical treatment. They have also called for a probe to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Broader Concerns on Public Safety

This unfortunate incident highlights a recurring and serious concern about public safety during religious processions and large gatherings across India. Such events often involve decorated floats, chariots, and other structures that can pose a risk if they are not carefully managed, particularly in areas with low-hanging or exposed electrical wires.

Key Safety Measures to Consider:

  • Pre-planning and Permitting: Event organizers must secure the necessary permissions from local authorities, including the police and electricity board. This ensures that the procession route is inspected for potential hazards.
  • Route Assessment: A detailed survey of the planned route is crucial to identify and mitigate risks like low-hanging electric wires, weak bridges, or narrow passages.
  • Coordination with Authorities: Close coordination between organizers, police, and electricity department officials can help in taking preventive measures, such as temporarily shutting off power or raising cables.
  • Volunteer Training: Volunteers participating in the procession should be trained on crowd management and emergency response.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of strict adherence to safety norms to prevent such heartbreaking tragedies from overshadowing cultural and religious celebrations.
