June 19, 2026: In a heart-stopping incident that could have easily turned into a massive tragedy, 35 long-distance passengers had a miraculous escape after a luxury private sleeper bus caught fire and was reduced to a heap of ashes on the national highway. The terrifying incident took place during the early hours near the Regupalem area under Elamanchili mandal in Anakapalle district. The luxury vehicle was fully engulfed by towering flames within minutes, but the swift presence of mind shown by the bus crew and an automated emergency alarm system ensured that every single passenger managed to deboard safely without any casualties.

The private sleeper bus had commenced its long journey from Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha, and was bound for Chennai, Tamil Nadu, traveling via Visakhapatnam along the Chennai-Kolkata National Highway (NH-16). According to regular eye-witnesses and survivors, the journey had been completely smooth until the late-night hours. The bus had stopped at a roadside highway restaurant for dinner, where passengers and crew members completed their meals before resuming their journey. Shortly after midnight, as the bus picked up speed on the smooth highway, almost all the passengers tucked themselves into their sleeper berths and fell into a deep slumber.

The Midnight Alarm and Driver’s Heroic Act

The disaster struck at around 3:00 AM when the vehicle was passing through the Anakapalle district borders near Regupalem. A thick volume of dense smoke suddenly began emanating from the left side of the front engine compartment. Within seconds, the thick smoke began leaking into the passenger cabin. Crucially, the luxury bus was equipped with an automatic fire safety sensor and alarm system. The moment the smoke density crossed a threshold, the emergency alarm inside the cabin went off with a loud, piercing siren.

The sharp sound of the automated safety alarm immediately alerted the driver. Realizing that a massive fire was brewing under the hood, the driver acted with extreme courage and precision. Instead of panicking or slowing down gradually, he immediately steered the heavy vehicle to the extreme edge of the highway, bringing it to a firm halt on the service shoulder.

As soon as the bus stopped, the driver and the bus helper ran through the narrow aisle, shouting at the top of their lungs to wake up the sleeping passengers. The cabin was rapidly filling with suffocating carbon monoxide smoke, creating a sudden panic among the passengers who woke up to find themselves in a dark, smoke-filled room.

Squeezing Out to Safety

Because the vehicle was a sleeper coach, many passengers found it initially difficult to navigate the narrow passage due to the privacy curtains blocking the view. The crew members quickly threw open the main exit door. However, realizing that time was running out as flames began leaping from the dashboard area, passengers took matters into their own hands. While many rushed through the main exit door, a few alert passengers used emergency safety hammers to smash open the large glass windows on the side.

Men, women, and elderly passengers helped each other jump down from the windows onto the hard road below. “We were deep asleep when a loud siren woke us up. The air was full of burning plastic smell and smoke. Everyone was shouting. I just grabbed my family and jumped out of a smashed window. Within two minutes of us getting down, the whole bus became a ball of fire,” recalled a visibly shaken survivor who was heading to Chennai.

Fire Department Battles the Raging Inferno

Within less than five minutes of the last passenger stepping off, the entire luxury coach was swallowed by massive fireballs. The high-performance air-conditioning systems, interior foam berths, curtains, and full diesel tanks acted as immediate fuel, creating an intense blaze that lit up the dark highway.

The driver immediately alerted the local police control room and the nearest fire station. Responding to the emergency call, local police teams from Elamanchili and Anakapalle Rural hurried to the spot to cordon off the highway and manage the gathering crowd. Three fire tenders from the state firefighting department rushed to the spot. It took the firefighters nearly an hour of intense spraying to bring the blazing inferno completely under control. By the time the fire was fully doused, the luxury bus was reduced to a completely charred, hollow skeleton of twisted iron and metal.

Technical Failure Suspected as Primary Cause

Anakapalle Rural Inspector of Police (CI) Nunjay visited the accident site along with transport department technical experts to conduct a primary assessment. Speaking to media reporters at the spot, the senior police officer confirmed that all 35 passengers on board had escaped absolutely unhurt.

Preliminary investigations by the mechanical experts indicate that the fire originated from a severe electrical short-circuit in the primary engine wiring harness near the battery box. The friction and high heat build-up under continuous long-distance driving conditions likely caused the insulation wires to melt, leading to sparks that quickly ignited the engine fuel lines. The transport department has ordered a detailed forensic check on the fitness certificates and maintenance logs of the private travel agency.

Alternative Arrangements for Stranded Travelers

Following the successful rescue operation, the local police department moved the stranded passengers to a safe location nearby and provided them with clean drinking water and breakfast. Since most of the passengers lost their heavy luggage, clothes, and personal belongings to the sudden fire, the local administration coordinated with the private travel operator to arrange an alternative luxury bus to safely transport all the passengers to their final destination in Chennai.

This latest incident has once again turned the spotlight on the recurring safety issues regarding long-distance private sleeper buses operating across the state highways. Over the last several months, Andhra Pradesh and neighboring states have recorded multiple major bus fires, prompting the state transport authorities to announce a strict, mandatory safety drive. Officials stated that surprise inspections will be conducted on all interstate night-service sleeper buses to verify the working condition of emergency exit hammers, automated fire alarms, and valid onboard fire extinguishers to prevent such technical disasters in the future.
