New Delhi, December 02, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly offered “all possible support” for the recovery of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson, Begum Khaleda Zia, who is currently in a critical medical condition in a Dhaka hospital.

In a message posted on social media, PM Modi expressed his deep concern over the former three-time Prime Minister’s deteriorating health. He acknowledged her significant contributions to Bangladesh’s public life over many years and extended India’s sincere prayers and best wishes for her speedy recovery. The gesture highlights India’s commitment to engaging with all political stakeholders in Bangladesh, a key neighbor.

Critical Health Condition

The 80-year-old political veteran was admitted to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on November 23 with a severe chest infection that impacted her heart and lungs. Her condition worsened sharply, leading to her being placed on ventilator support in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU).

Party leaders from the BNP have described her state as “extremely unwell” and “very critical.” She has been battling multiple chronic health issues, including liver and kidney complications, diabetes, and heart problems. A team of local specialists, supported by international medical consultants, is overseeing her treatment. Separately, a five-member delegation of Chinese doctors also arrived in Dhaka to assist the medical team.

Diplomatic Significance

The outreach from New Delhi is seen as a significant diplomatic move. Historically, Khaleda Zia’s relationship with India has been described as less warm than that of her long-time rival, Sheikh Hasina. However, with the recent major political changes in Bangladesh, which saw the ousting of the Awami League government, the BNP has emerged as a key player in the nation’s future political landscape.

The BNP has officially expressed its sincere gratitude for PM Modi’s thoughtful message and the offer of support, appreciating the goodwill gesture at this difficult time for their party chief.

India’s prompt and public expression of support underscores its commitment to the stability, democracy, and well-being of Bangladesh, moving beyond traditional political alignments to engage with all major national figures.
