In a powerful display of resilience and strategic preparedness, the Mumbai Police have rolled out an extensive, multi-layered security plan for the highly anticipated Ganpati Visarjan, the final day of the ten-day Ganesh festival. The announcement comes on the heels of a chilling threat received by the Mumbai Traffic Control Room, which warned of “human bombs” and a massive amount of RDX explosives being planted across the city. While the authorities are investigating the credibility of the threat, they are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the safety and security of the millions of devotees expected to participate in the grand processions.

The threat, purportedly from an organization calling itself ‘Lashkar-e-Jihadi,’ claimed that 14 terrorists had entered Mumbai and planned to use 34 vehicles rigged with “human bombs” and 400 kg of RDX. The message, received on the official WhatsApp helpline, caused an immediate and city-wide high alert. In response, the Mumbai Police, in close coordination with other security agencies, have meticulously planned a comprehensive security grid to counter any potential threat and ensure a peaceful conclusion to the festivities.

Massive Deployment and Technological Integration

A staggering force of over 21,000 police personnel, including senior officers, inspectors, and constables, will be on duty across the city. This formidable deployment will be further augmented by 14 companies of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) and four companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). Quick Response Teams (QRTs), Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads (BDDS), and dog squads will also be strategically stationed at key locations, particularly at major immersion sites like Girgaon Chowpatty and Juhu Beach.

In a significant technological leap, the Mumbai Police will be utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) for the first time to manage traffic and crowd control. The AI-driven system will provide real-time updates on traffic flow, helping to prevent congestion and optimize immersion routes. Drone surveillance will be deployed to monitor large gatherings and processions, offering a bird’s-eye view to the control room. The use of private drones, however, has been strictly prohibited to avoid any interference with official surveillance.

Eye on the Streets: Surveillance and Vigilance

Over 10,000 CCTV cameras, already a critical part of Mumbai’s security infrastructure, will be monitored round the clock to keep a constant watch on the movement of crowds and to identify any suspicious activity. Police personnel in plain clothes will be deployed at sensitive spots and at popular Ganesh pandals to blend in with the crowd and provide an additional layer of security. Special attention will be given to the safety of women, children, and senior citizens amidst the massive crowds.

The police have also appealed to the public to remain calm and vigilant. They have urged citizens not to believe in rumors and to immediately report any suspicious objects, individuals, or activities to the police control room. The collective vigilance of Mumbaikars, a hallmark of the city’s spirit, is being considered a crucial element of the security plan. The police’s swift and decisive action, coupled with the unwavering determination of the city’s residents, sends a clear message that Mumbai will not be cowed by threats and will celebrate its cherished festival with the same fervor and unity as always.
