A Pakistani Air Force (PAF) airstrike in the remote Tirah Valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has resulted in a devastating loss of life, with local authorities and media reports indicating at least 30 people were killed, including women and children. The incident, which took place in the early hours of Monday, has sparked a humanitarian outcry and highlighted the ongoing conflict between the Pakistani military and militant groups in the region.

The strike targeted the village of Matre Dara, a settlement located deep within the mountainous and historically volatile Khyber district. According to local sources and several news outlets, PAF fighter jets dropped at least eight bombs on the village around 2 a.m. The blasts reportedly leveled several homes, trapping residents under the rubble and leading to a significant loss of life.

While local reports claim all 30 of the deceased were civilians, the narrative from official sources is more complex and contested. The Associated Press, citing local police, reported that the casualties were the result of a bomb-making cache belonging to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants exploding. This report suggests that the explosion of the militants’ own materials, rather than the airstrike itself, caused a substantial portion of the damage and casualties. Police officials have also accused the militants of using civilians as human shields.

The differing accounts have created a chaotic picture on the ground. Rescue efforts are underway, with villagers and first responders frantically searching for survivors and bodies buried beneath the debris. Disturbing images and videos circulating on social media show scenes of destruction, with the bodies of children and adults being pulled from the collapsed structures. The exact number of injured remains unclear, but local medical facilities are reportedly overwhelmed.

The Pakistani military has not yet issued a detailed statement on the operation. The strikes come on the heels of intensified security operations against the TTP, a group that has renewed its attacks on Pakistani forces since the Afghan Taliban took control in Kabul in 2021. The latest tragedy underscores the perilous situation faced by civilians caught in the crossfire of the long-running insurgency in Pakistan’s northwestern provinces.

Past military operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have frequently led to civilian casualties, drawing criticism from human rights organizations. The latest incident is expected to amplify calls for greater transparency and accountability from the military regarding its counter-terrorism efforts and the measures taken to protect non-combatants. The government of Pakistan has launched an inquiry into the matter, although such investigations have historically faced scrutiny over their findings and lack of independent oversight.
