New Delhi, February 18, 2026: A viral video from a Punjabi wedding has set social media ablaze, with claims that a bride was showered with a staggering Rs 8.5 crore in cash. However, as the footage continues to rack up millions of views and spark intense debate online, the groom’s family has stepped forward to set the record straight, calling the figures “wildly exaggerated.”
The video, which began circulating on platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), showcases a lavish ceremony held in the Tarn Taran district of Punjab on February 14, 2026. In the clip, the bride is seen standing on a stage while guests and family members shower her with an endless rain of currency notes—a traditional, albeit often smaller-scale, gesture known in Punjabi culture as Varna.
As the music plays, the floor of the venue becomes almost invisible, completely blanketed by a thick carpet of banknotes. The sheer volume of cash shown in the video led many social media users to estimate the “loot” at over Rs 8 crore, with some labeling it the “ultimate billionaire wedding.”
Following the massive online backlash regarding the perceived “disrespect of currency” and “excessive exhibitionism,” the groom’s brother, Sikander Singh, clarified the situation.
Speaking to local media, Sikander explained that while the family did celebrate with a cash shower, the amount was nowhere near the rumored crores.
The event’s management team and the DJ who handled the function also dismissed the viral claims. According to the DJ, the total cash involved was closer to Rs 4 lakh, consisting mostly of low-denomination notes (Rs 10 and Rs 20) and some Australian dollar notes brought by the groom.
“The visual effect of many small notes can look like a much larger sum on camera,” an event staffer noted. “We are unsure how the specific figure of Rs 8.5 crore started trending, but it is factually incorrect.”
Despite the clarification, the video has sparked a heated debate on the ethics of such displays.
While the “Big Fat Indian Wedding” remains a global phenomenon for its opulence, this instance serves as a reminder of how quickly social media can distort reality. What was a Rs 2–4 lakh celebratory gesture was inflated by over 200 times by the time it reached the trending page.
The groom’s family has urged the public to stop spreading misinformation, though the video remains a testament to the enduring fascination—and controversy—surrounding extravagant wedding rituals in South Asia.
