New Delhi, january 28, 2026: Panic gripped educational institutions in North India on Wednesday morning, January 28, 2026, as several prominent schools in Gurugram and Chandigarh received bomb threat emails. The threats, which arrived just as the school day was beginning, prompted immediate evacuations, a massive deployment of security forces, and the suspension of classes across multiple campuses.
The threats were reportedly received via official school email IDs around 7:10 AM, a critical time when school buses were either en route or arriving at campuses. In Gurugram, at least eight private schools were targeted, including:
As soon as the emails were discovered, school administrations activated emergency protocols. In many cases, students who had already arrived were ushered into open playgrounds before being safely sent back home. Parents were sent urgent notifications to collect their children from bus stops or school gates, leading to traffic congestion and a palpable sense of anxiety across the city.
Simultaneously, at least five to nine schools in Chandigarh received similar threatening messages. The Chandigarh Police, along with the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) and sniffer dog units, were rushed to the affected sites.
“We are taking every threat seriously. While preliminary checks suggest these may be hoaxes, the safety of students and staff is our paramount concern,” a senior Chandigarh police official stated during the search operations.
The Gurugram Police and the SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) have carried out extensive “combing operations” across all mentioned campuses. As of midday, no suspicious objects or explosive materials have been found.
The Cyber Crime Unit has been tasked with tracing the origin of the emails. Initial reports suggest a pattern similar to the wave of hoax threats that hit schools in Ahmedabad and Noida earlier this month. Those previous emails reportedly contained provocative language and references to political figures, though officials have not yet confirmed if the content of today’s emails is identical.
The timing of these threats is particularly disruptive, as many schools are currently conducting pre-board examinations and practicals.
This incident marks the third major “hoax wave” in the Delhi-NCR and Punjab-Haryana region in the last two months. Security experts are concerned about the “copycat” nature of these threats, which, while ultimately found to be false, succeed in draining administrative resources and causing widespread psychological distress among parents and children.
