New Delhi, April 29, 2026 – In a significant development in the high-profile Meghalaya “honeymoon murder” case, a local court in Shillong has granted bail to the prime accused, Sonam Raghuvanshi. The decision, delivered on April 27, 2026, comes nearly ten months after her arrest in connection with the death of her husband, Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi.

The court’s decision to grant bail, however, is rooted in procedural technicalities rather than an acquittal. It highlights crucial gaps in police protocol during the initial stages of the investigation, raising questions about the importance of procedural compliance in serious criminal cases.

The Court’s Reasoning: A Procedural Lapse

The Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial) of Shillong, Dashalene R. Kharbteng, noted that the primary reason for granting bail was the Meghalaya Police’s failure to effectively communicate the specific grounds of arrest to the accused at the time of her detention in June 2025.

Under Article 22(1) of the Constitution of India, every arrested person has a fundamental right to be informed of the grounds of their arrest. The court observed that the “Intimation of Grounds of Arrest” document presented to Sonam contained incomplete documentation, including unticked checkboxes, and erroneously cited Section 403(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)—which pertains to dishonest misappropriation of property—instead of the much graver Section 103(1) (Murder).

The court rejected the prosecution’s argument that these were merely “clerical errors,” stating that such errors could not be dismissed when they occurred across multiple documents. By relying on recent legal precedents regarding the violation of constitutional safeguards during arrests, the court deemed that the accused had suffered prejudice, thus justifying the grant of bail.

Background of the Case

The case, which shocked the country, began in May 2025. Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife, Sonam, arrived in Shillong for their honeymoon on May 20. Only days later, on May 23, they were reported missing after checking out of a local homestay.

A massive search operation ensued, lasting over a week. On June 2, 2025, the investigation took a grim turn when Raja’s body was recovered from a deep gorge near the Wei Sawdong Falls in Sohra, East Khasi Hills.

Following the discovery, the investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) moved swiftly. Sonam Raghuvanshi was apprehended in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district on June 9, 2025. Investigators alleged that she had conspired with her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, and hired three accomplices—Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi—to execute the murder. A 790-page charge sheet filed in September 2025 detailed the conspiracy, portraying Sonam as an active participant in the planning and execution of the crime.

Reactions and Future Legal Steps

The bail order has sent shockwaves through the community and the victim’s family. In Indore, Raja’s mother expressed profound anguish and frustration at the court’s decision, stating that the family’s faith in the judicial process has been shaken.

Conversely, the law enforcement authorities in Meghalaya have maintained their stance. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, stated that the police respect the court’s order but remain committed to the case. “The investigation and trial will proceed as per law, and we remain confident in the evidence already placed before the court,” he told reporters.

The conditions of the bail are strict. Sonam Raghuvanshi has been ordered to:

  • Not leave the jurisdiction of the court without permission.
  • Attend all court hearings on the dates fixed.
  • Not attempt to tamper with evidence or influence witnesses.
  • Execute a personal bond of ₹50,000 with a surety.

As the legal proceedings continue, this case serves as a stern reminder of the imperative nature of precision in criminal procedure. While the trial will now proceed with the accused out on bail, the prosecution is expected to vigorously defend its case in the upcoming sessions, keeping the national spotlight firmly on the pursuit of justice for Raja Raghuvanshi.
