New Delhi, April 1, 2026 – A commercial tanker was reportedly struck by multiple “unknown projectiles” approximately 17 nautical miles north of the Qatari capital, Doha, in the early hours of Wednesday, April 1, 2026. The incident, confirmed by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), has once again heightened concerns regarding the safety of critical energy shipping routes in the Arabian Gulf.

Details of the Strike

According to a warning notice issued by the UKMTO, the vessel’s Company Security Officer (CSO) reported that the tanker was hit on its port side. The initial impact caused visible damage to the hull above the waterline. In a subsequent update, officials confirmed that the vessel was actually targeted by two projectiles.

One of these projectiles ignited a fire onboard, which the crew successfully managed to extinguish shortly after the attack. The second projectile reportedly remains unexploded and is currently lodged within the ship’s engine room. Specialist authorities are expected to board the vessel to examine and safely neutralize the device.

Crew Safety and Environmental Impact

Despite the severity of the incident and the presence of unexploded ordnance, all crew members have been reported safe and accounted for. Preliminary assessments indicate that the damage is confined to the ship’s structure, and there have been no reports of oil leaks or significant environmental damage in the waters off Qatar.

Rising Regional Volatility

This attack is the third reported maritime security incident in the region within a 24-hour window. On March 31, a Kuwait-flagged tanker, the Al Salmi, was similarly struck while anchored northwest of Dubai. Furthermore, a container ship reported a near-miss involving two projectiles near Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia.

These developments come at a time of extreme regional instability. Military activities and retaliatory strikes involving various regional powers have recently intensified, directly impacting the Strait of Hormuz—a vital chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.

Security Advisory

The UKMTO and regional maritime security agencies have advised all vessels transiting the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to exercise extreme caution. Masters of vessels are being urged to maintain a high state of vigilance and immediately report any suspicious activity, sightings of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or nearby explosions.

Local authorities in Qatar are currently investigating the nature of the projectiles, though security analysts suggest the characteristics of the strike are consistent with recent drone-based attacks seen in the region. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the incident.
