New Delhi, March 17, 2026 – A search operation spanning several days concluded in tragedy on Monday morning as rescue teams recovered the body of a 28-year-old man from the ruins of a factory in Sector 4. The victim, identified as Upendra Kumar, had been missing since a devastating fire tore through the manufacturing unit on Thursday, March 12, 2026.
The discovery was made in the basement of Capital Power Systems Limited, a smart meter manufacturing plant, after firefighters finally managed to douse the stubborn flames that had plagued the structure for four days.
Upendra, a storekeeper and a resident of Harola village in Sector 5, was on a night shift when the blaze erupted around 5:30 AM on Thursday. While hundreds of his colleagues managed to escape—many by jumping from upper-floor windows—Upendra remained unaccounted for.
According to police officials:
The victim’s father, Sarvan Kumar, told authorities that his son was the sole breadwinner for the family. “He left for his shift on Wednesday night and never came back,” he shared amidst emotional scenes outside the factory premises.
The fire, which is suspected to have been triggered by an electrical short circuit, quickly escalated due to the presence of highly flammable materials, including plastic granules, wiring components, and cardboard packaging.

The fire was initially brought under control on Friday night, but pockets of fire reignited in the chemical-heavy basement on Saturday morning, requiring an additional 48 hours of cooling operations.
At the time of the incident, approximately 350 employees were inside the building. As thick black smoke engulfed the stairwells, workers were forced to make life-or-death decisions. In a desperate bid for survival, dozens of workers jumped from the third and fourth floors.
Emergency services and local passersby used makeshift cushions and ladders to assist those trapped. While 36 of the 38 injured workers have been discharged, two remain under observation at a medical facility in Delhi with serious injuries.
The Fire Department and Noida Authority are now shifting their focus toward a thorough investigation into the factory’s safety protocols.
“The building has suffered extensive structural damage, particularly in the basement. We are assessing whether the structure is stable or if it needs to be demolished for public safety,” a senior fire official stated.
Questions regarding the factory’s fire-fighting equipment and whether the basement was being used in compliance with safety norms remain unanswered. For now, the local police have sent Upendra’s body for a post-mortem and are waiting for a formal complaint from the family to initiate further legal action.
