Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh – In the wake of a tragic stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela that claimed the lives of 30 devotees and left dozens injured, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced a series of stringent measures to enhance safety and crowd management for the remainder of the religious festival.

The stampede occurred early Wednesday morning at the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers, where millions of pilgrims had gathered for a holy dip on the auspicious occasion of Mauni Amavasya. As devotees surged towards the bathing area, chaos ensued, leading to the fatal crush.

Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath promptly initiated an inquiry into the incident and announced ex-gratia compensation of Rs 25 lakh for the families of the deceased. Simultaneously, the state government has implemented the following key changes to prevent a recurrence of the tragedy:

No-Vehicle Zone: The entire Maha Kumbh Mela area has been declared a no-vehicle zone until February 4, the day after the next major bathing day of Basant Panchami. This measure aims to reduce congestion and facilitate smoother movement of pilgrims.

Cancellation of VVIP Passes: All special passes that allowed vehicles to enter the Mela grounds have been revoked. This decision eliminates preferential treatment and ensures that everyone adheres to the no-vehicle policy.

One-Way Traffic System: To regulate the flow of devotees, a one-way traffic system has been introduced within the Mela area. This will help prevent bottlenecks and reduce the risk of overcrowding in specific zones.

Restricted Entry of Vehicles: Vehicles from neighboring districts of Prayagraj will be stopped at district borders to manage the influx of traffic and prevent excessive congestion within the city.

Ban on Four-Wheelers: The entry of four-wheelers into Prayagraj has been completely banned until February 4. This measure will further alleviate traffic pressure and enhance pedestrian safety.

In addition to these immediate changes, the state government has deployed senior IAS officers with experience in managing large-scale events to oversee the crowd control arrangements at the Maha Kumbh. The Chief Minister has also directed officials to coordinate closely with railway authorities to ensure the smooth and safe departure of pilgrims from Prayagraj.

These decisive actions by the Uttar Pradesh government underscore its commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of devotees during the Maha Kumbh Mela. By implementing stricter measures and enhancing coordination among various agencies, the government aims to prevent future tragedies and ensure a secure and fulfilling pilgrimage experience for all.
