New Delhi, December 3, 2025: A widely discussed video featuring candid street interviews with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) living in the United States has ignited a fierce debate online by showcasing their primary reasons for choosing not to return to India permanently. The footage, circulated across major social media platforms, captured a range of personal and practical considerations, challenging the traditional assumption that a return to the homeland is an inevitable part of the NRI lifecycle.

Quality of Life Concerns Are Highlighted

The core arguments presented by the interviewees were centered on quality-of-life concerns that are perceived to be significantly better managed in the US. The issue of traffic chaos and poor infrastructure was cited by many as a major deterrent, with one viral post suggesting that the stress of the daily commute alone is enough to prevent a return. The constant noise, aggressive driving habits, and pollution were highlighted as serious degradations of the everyday living experience.

It was also argued that the systemic and institutional issues prevalent in India—such as bureaucracy, corruption, and a perceived lack of public accountability—create an environment of ongoing frustration that many find difficult to readapt to after years of living in a more structured system abroad.

Economic and Professional Factors Are Cited

Beyond infrastructure, strong emphasis was placed on the economic and professional advantages currently enjoyed in the US. Many NRIs pointed to the higher salaries and professional growth opportunities that are often unavailable or less prevalent in the Indian job market for highly specialized roles. Even with a lower cost of living in India, the perceived lower income and increased workload were noted as significant disadvantages.

The financial complexities of relocating were also mentioned, with the burden of exit taxes and the intricate process of managing two tax systems making a permanent move back financially burdensome for those who have built significant assets abroad.

Privacy and Systemic Structure Are Prized

Several interviewees pointed to deeply personal factors that influence their decision. Privacy and women’s safety were noted as critical concerns, with some explaining that the freedom from constant societal judgment and intrusive questioning often found in the US is a valued relief. The absence of a demanding support system where chores must be performed by oneself was deemed preferable to the complexity and chaos of managing domestic life in India.

The consensus from the video was that for many, the decision is not driven by a lack of love for India, but a rational choice to remain in a place where systemic pressures—from healthcare costs to work-life balance—are managed with greater structure and predictability, ensuring a more stable and stress-free life.
