In a highly anticipated AFC Champions League Two Group D clash at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, FC Goa succumbed to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Saudi Arabian powerhouse Al-Nassr FC. Despite the loss, the ‘Gaurs’ delivered a spirited and gritty performance, securing their first-ever goal in the continental competition and pushing the group leaders to the very end.
The match, which drew a massive and electrifying crowd despite the absence of Al-Nassr’s star Cristiano Ronaldo, was always expected to be a tough test for the Indian side. Al-Nassr, boasting a star-studded lineup including players like Sadio Mané and João Félix (both later introduced as substitutes), immediately asserted their dominance, controlling possession and pinning FC Goa back into their own half.
The visitors’ pressure paid off early, with Brazilian forward Angelo Gabriel breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute. He exchanged quick passes at the edge of the box before unleashing a delightful, curling right-footed shot that nestled past the FC Goa goalkeeper, Hrithik Tiwari, to make it 1-0.
Al-Nassr doubled their lead in the 27th minute through Haroune Camara. A fine attacking move saw the ball reach the Saudi international inside a crowded penalty area, and he displayed excellent composure to swivel and slot the ball past the defense and into the net.
With the score at 2-0, it seemed the Saudi Pro League giants were cruising to a comfortable victory. However, FC Goa refused to capitulate. A forced substitution midway through the half saw local boy Brison Fernandes enter the field for the injured Javier Siverio, and the move proved to be a stroke of genius.
Just minutes before the halftime whistle, Fernandes injected life back into the contest. Following a brilliant through-ball from Borja Herrera, the young winger broke the offside trap, showed immense composure to beat a sliding challenge, and fired a precise grounder past Al-Nassr’s goalkeeper Bento Krepski in the 41st minute. The strike, which sent the home crowd into raptures, was not only a moment of individual brilliance but also FC Goa’s historic maiden goal in the AFC Champions League Two.
The second half settled into a familiar pattern of Al-Nassr controlling possession, but their intensity dropped, largely due to the challenging humidity. FC Goa’s defense, marshaled by captain Sandesh Jhingan and Pol Moreno, held firm, restricting the visitors from finding a third goal. Al-Nassr coach Jorge Jesus introduced star players Mané and Félix just after the hour mark in an attempt to restore the two-goal cushion, but the ‘Gaurs’ continued to fight.
FC Goa even had a golden opportunity to level the scores when Boris Singh found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but Bento made a crucial save. The home side piled on the pressure in the dying minutes, forcing a series of corner kicks that threatened the Al-Nassr goal.
The match, however, ended with a sour note for the hosts as midfielder David Timor was shown a straight red card in stoppage time for kicking the ball away in frustration. The final whistle confirmed the 2-1 scoreline in favour of Al-Nassr.
While the loss marks FC Goa’s third consecutive defeat in the competition, Coach Manolo Marquez expressed pride in his team’s performance, particularly their spirited fightback against one of Asia’s richest clubs. Al-Nassr maintain their perfect record at the top of Group D, while FC Goa will look to carry the fighting spirit into the reverse fixture in Riyadh on November 5.
