New Delhi, April 6, 2026: The Indian Premier League (IPL) never fails to deliver high-octane drama, both on and off the 22 yards. In a match that will be remembered as much for its emotional crescendo as its cricketing masterclass, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) registered their first victory of the IPL 2026 season. Chasing down a tricky target against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, it was LSG’s ₹27 crore captain, Rishabh Pant, who steered his side home in a last-over thriller.
However, the defining image of the night belonged to LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka, who was seen visibly overwhelmed and on the verge of tears in the stands as the winning runs were hit.
The buildup to this game was nothing short of a pressure cooker for the Lucknow franchise. After dropping their opening fixture of the season against the Delhi Capitals, social media was ablaze with videos of an animated post-match discussion involving Goenka, Pant, and head coach Justin Langer.
While the franchise quickly moved to dispel rumors of a rift by releasing lighter behind-the-scenes footage, the spotlight remained firmly fixed on Pant. Having been acquired for a historic ₹27 crore in the mega auction, expectations were sky-high, and the pressure to deliver a match-winning performance was immense.
Chasing a modest but tricky target of 157 on a surface that offered plenty of assistance to the bowlers, LSG got off to a flying start courtesy of Aiden Markram’s brisk 45 off 27 balls. However, the SRH bowling attack, led by left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey, applied the brakes in the middle overs.
When big hitters like Nicholas Pooran and Abdul Samad departed, leaving LSG in a spot of bother, Pant knew he had to drop anchor.
As soon as the ball raced across the boundary rope, a flooded wave of relief took over the stadium. Pant simply dropped to his knees on the turf, letting the realization of the hard-fought win sink in
