A police officer in Bihar has been suspended from duty following the widespread circulation of a video that captured him allegedly harassing a young man and woman seated in a restaurant. The incident, which has sparked considerable public outrage, occurred at a restaurant in Katihar district’s Barsoi on October 24th.
The viral footage, reportedly from a CCTV camera within the premises of the BR-11 restaurant, shows the Station House Officer (SHO) approaching a table where a brother and sister were sitting together. The officer can be heard questioning the young man about the identity of the woman with him. The youth calmly responds with the Hindi phrase, “Behen hai meri” (She is my sister). Despite this clear explanation, the officer reportedly escalated the confrontation, raising his voice and using objectionable language in what has been described as an act of intimidation and misuse of authority.
The video quickly gained traction on social media platforms, drawing massive criticism from the public who condemned the officer’s intrusive and aggressive behaviour towards the siblings.
Prompt action was taken by the senior police officials following the review of the viral video. An internal inquiry was immediately launched into the incident. The investigation concluded that the SHO’s conduct was unacceptable, confirming that he had used inappropriate language and displayed behaviour that was both careless and arbitrary. This conduct was deemed to have significantly tarnished the image of the police force.
Consequently, the concerned officer has been placed under suspension. This quick decision reflects the department’s commitment to upholding standards of professionalism and ensuring that officers respect the public. The suspension serves as a strong signal against the misuse of power and the harassment of citizens. The police force is expected to maintain law and order while also ensuring the safety and dignity of the public they serve. This incident has reignited discussions on police conduct and the need for greater sensitivity and accountability within the ranks.
