New Delhi, December 2, 2025: A mysterious video claiming to show the interstellar object Comet 3I/ATLAS glowing with sharply defined edges, reminiscent of an alien spacecraft, has sparked a massive viral sensation online. The footage, which has circulated widely, has intensified public fascination with the comet while simultaneously raising critical questions about the source and authenticity of unverified astronomical content, particularly amid growing capabilities in AI-generated imagery.

The Alien Spaceship Narrative

The viral video clip, often accompanied by sensational captions, allegedly depicts Comet 3I/ATLAS as a compact, glowing object with a distinct, almost structured appearance—a stark contrast to the blurry, nebulous images typically released by official space agencies. This particular visual portrayal led to immediate speculation that the object was not a natural comet but possibly an “alien probe” or a “technological mothership” disguised as a comet.

This speculation was further fueled by previously circulating theories from scientists like Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, who has pointed out several anomalies in the comet’s behavior and characteristics. The public’s high anticipation for high-resolution images of the rare interstellar visitor was compounded by its perception as a possible extraterrestrial artifact.

The Scientific Reality is Stated

Despite the viral frenzy, the overwhelming body of evidence gathered by space agencies and observatories categorically confirms that 3I/ATLAS is a natural comet. Observations from multiple instruments, including NASA’s own assets, have confirmed the presence of a clear coma (a fuzzy cloud of gas and dust) and a tail—the telltale features of a true comet.

It has been confirmed that 3I/ATLAS exhibits textbook outgassing and follows a highly hyperbolic trajectory, meaning it is simply passing through our solar system and is not gravitationally bound to the Sun. Furthermore, scientists have identified chemical fingerprints consistent with volatile-rich comets, with no technosignatures or evidence that would suggest alien engineering.

The Source Is Revealed as Manipulation

In the case of several highly detailed or unusual images and videos of 3I/ATLAS that have gone viral, the strange appearance has been attributed to two main factors: misinformation and image manipulation.

In one instance, a particularly sharp-edged image achieved by a Canadian astrophotographer using a small telescope was quickly seized upon by rumor-mongers, but skeptical experts pointed out that the structured appearance was likely a result of heavy post-processing and motion blur, rather than genuine structural features of the comet. In another incident, some viral footage was confirmed by scientists to actually show a microscopic paramecium—an entirely different object—and not the interstellar comet at all. The ease with which such manipulated or misidentified media spreads underscores the dangers of misinformation in the digital age.
