New Delhi, December 08, 2025: Film enthusiasts who missed the theatrical run of the period drama Kaantha are in for a treat. Streaming giant Netflix has officially confirmed the Over-The-Top (OTT) release date for the much-talked-about film, starring Dulquer Salmaan, bringing the cinematic experience straight to viewers’ homes very soon.
Kaantha is a captivating period drama set against the vibrant and dramatic backdrop of 1950s Madras (now Chennai), exploring the golden era of cinema and the conflicts that played out behind the scenes.
The story centers on the intense and complicated relationship between a celebrated, veteran filmmaker, Ayya (played by Samuthirakani), and his protégé, a rising star named T. K. Mahadevan (portrayed by Dulquer Salmaan). Ayya is instrumental in shaping Mahadevan’s path to stardom.
However, their professional bond fractures when the ambitious actor, Mahadevan, begins to assert his creative influence and challenge his mentor’s authority, even taking over Ayya’s dream project—originally titled Shaantha and later renamed Kaantha to suit his star image.
The clash between the two creative forces spirals into a serious on-set conflict, which takes a sinister turn when a mysterious murder occurs during the film’s climax shoot. With both the director and the hero as prime suspects, a police officer, Inspector Devaraj (Rana Daggubati), steps in to unravel the truth and the mystery surrounding the tragedy.
The film, which also marks the Tamil debut of actress Bhagyashri Borse, promises a layered narrative that blends creative rivalries with a gripping whodunnit thriller.
Directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, Kaantha was released in cinemas on November 14, 2025. Despite featuring a stellar cast and receiving good reviews from critics for its meticulous period detailing, strong performances, and compelling storyline, the movie had a mixed run at the box office.
The shift to Netflix provides a significant opportunity for the film to reach a much larger audience globally. For those who enjoy slow-burn period pieces and tightly-wound thrillers, the upcoming digital premiere on December 12th is a chance to dive into the film’s nostalgic visual world and emotional core.
Movie lovers can now mark their calendars to stream Dulquer Salmaan’s latest thriller exclusively on Netflix, where the secrets of the 1950s film set will finally unfold on the small screen.
