New Delhi, February 3, 2026: The Indian film industry is abuzz with reports of a massive casting development for one of its most beloved comedy franchises. Akshay Kumar, the undisputed “Khiladi” of Bollywood, has reportedly signed on to play the primary antagonist in Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal 5.
This installment marks the fifth chapter of the blockbuster franchise that first began in 2006. While the series is synonymous with slapstick humor and the iconic camaraderie of its lead boys, the addition of a superstar like Akshay Kumar in a villainous role is set to pivot the franchise into a new era of “comic-action” scale.
The highlight of Golmaal 5 will undoubtedly be the face-off between Ajay Devgn, who reprises his legendary role as Gopal, and Akshay Kumar. While the two veterans have shared the screen in classics like Suhaag, Khakee, and more recently in the Cop Universe (Sooryavanshi and Singham Again), this marks a rare occasion where they will be pitted against each other as hero and villain.
Trade experts suggest that Kumar’s entry provides a significant boost to the franchise’s commercial appeal. Known for his impeccable comic timing and high-octane action, Kumar is expected to play a “grey” character that is both menacing and hilarious, staying true to the Golmaal DNA.
While the antagonist brings a fresh twist, the heart of the film remains its ensemble cast. Rohit Shetty has ensured that the core “gang” returns to deliver the signature chaos fans expect:
Adding to the excitement, reports indicate that Kareena Kapoor Khan is also set to return to the franchise, marking her third appearance in the series after Golmaal Returns and Golmaal 3.
Golmaal 5 isn’t just scaling up its cast; it’s reportedly evolving its genre. Sources close to the production suggest the film will move away from the “prank-driven” situational comedy of previous parts and venture into the fantasy-comedy zone.
“Rohit Shetty is planning a mammoth theatrical experience. The script incorporates fantasy elements that allow for larger-than-life sequences, making it the most expensive Golmaal film to date,” a source revealed.
Filming for Golmaal 5 is scheduled to commence in late February 2026 at Mumbai’s Film City. The director is currently wrapping up his biopic on former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria before shifting focus entirely to this comedy extravaganza.
The makers are eyeing a early 2027 release, strategically timed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the franchise.
Interestingly, Golmaal 5 is one of two major projects where Akshay Kumar is exploring a darker side. He is also set to play the antagonist in Priyadarshan’s upcoming thriller Haiwaan. For fans, seeing Kumar balance his “hero” persona in Housefull 5 and Welcome to the Jungle with these heavy-duty negative roles is a testament to his versatility as a performer.
