Border Security Force (BSF) constable Purnam Kumar Shaw was handed over to Indian authorities by Pakistan Rangers today at the Attari-Wagah border crossing, marking the end of a 21-day ordeal that began when he inadvertently crossed the International Border. The jawan’s family has expressed immense relief and gratitude following his safe return.
Purnam Kumar Shaw, a member of the BSF’s 24th battalion, was on duty in the Ferozepur sector of Punjab on April 23 when the incident occurred. Reports indicate that Shaw, who was part of a ‘Kisan Guard’ detail assisting farmers working ahead of the border fence, mistakenly misjudged the border’s alignment while seeking rest under a tree and crossed into Pakistani territory. He was subsequently apprehended by Pakistan Rangers.
The news of Shaw’s capture had plunged his family in Rishra, West Bengal, into deep distress. His wife had made fervent appeals for his safe return, and today, their prayers were answered. “It’s a great relief for us,” a family member told reporters, expressing their profound gratitude to the central government and the BSF for their persistent efforts.
Following Shaw’s detention, the BSF immediately initiated communication with Pakistan Rangers through established channels, including flag meetings, to secure his release. These sustained efforts have finally yielded positive results.
A BSF spokesperson confirmed the handover, stating that the process was conducted peacefully and in accordance with existing protocols. Upon his return at approximately 10:30 am, Shaw underwent a medical examination. He will also receive counseling and debriefing by BSF officials to understand the circumstances of his crossing and his time in Pakistani custody.
In the aftermath of this incident, the BSF has stated that an internal inquiry will be conducted by the Punjab Frontier to investigate the circumstances leading to Shaw crossing the border and to identify any potential procedural lapses. Pending the outcome of this inquiry, Shaw will not be assigned active duty.
The incident occurred a day after a tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, adding to the already heightened tensions along the India-Pakistan border. The BSF is primarily responsible for guarding the 3,323-kilometer-long border, a highly sensitive frontier.
Political figures have also reacted to Shaw’s safe return. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier voiced her concern and assured the family of the government’s support. Upon his release, she expressed her happiness and reiterated her contact with the family during his captivity.
Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for the jawan’s return, highlighting it as a victory of India’s resolve and diplomacy.
The safe return of Purnam Kumar Shaw brings much-needed relief to his family and underscores the continuous efforts made by the BSF and diplomatic channels in addressing such sensitive border issues.
