Flood and Debris Flow Wreak Havoc in Chamoli

Chamoli, Uttarakhand: In a devastating turn of events, the Chamoli district has been struck by severe flooding and debris flows, resulting in at least two individuals being reported missing and several villages being isolated. The incident, which was triggered by incessant rainfall, has led to significant damage to infrastructure and property in the region.

New Delhi, August 23, 2025: Flood was reported in the Pinder River, caused by a cloudburst that occurred in the higher reaches of the Nandakini River catchment. The sudden surge in water levels, accompanied by large amounts of debris, overwhelmed riverbanks and swept through villages situated along the river’s course. An extensive search and rescue operation was immediately launched by the district administration, local police, and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams.


Villages Isolated, Rescue Efforts Underway

The force of the floodwaters was immense, leading to the collapse of a key bridge that connected several villages to the main road. As a result, many communities have been left stranded, their access to essential supplies and communication networks severed. The district administration has been working tirelessly to establish temporary relief camps and to provide aid to the affected residents. Food and medical supplies are being airlifted to the isolated areas, and a massive effort is being made to clear the debris and restore road connectivity.

The missing individuals, whose identities have not yet been released, are believed to have been swept away by the fast-moving waters. The state government has announced a compensation package for the families of the missing individuals and for those whose homes and property have been destroyed. A detailed assessment of the damage is being conducted, and a plan for long-term rehabilitation is being prepared. The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of the Himalayan region to natural disasters and the need for robust disaster management strategies.
