In a significant development in the shocking Kolkata alleged gang rape case, the governing body of South Calcutta Law College has announced the suspension of all three accused individuals believed to be involved in the horrific incident. This decision, taken during a meeting held earlier today, comes amidst widespread outrage and calls for swift justice.
Concurrently, the Kolkata Police have issued a stringent advisory, emphasizing that any attempt to reveal the identity of the victim in the ongoing Kasba case will lead to severe legal repercussions. The police underscored that disclosing the identity of a rape victim, whether directly or indirectly, through documents, images, or social media content, constitutes a serious legal offense under relevant provisions of the law.
“It has come to notice that certain individuals are attempting to disclose the identity of the victim in the Kasba case through the circulation of confidential documents or by other means. This is a serious violation of the law,” a police statement asserted. The advisory, widely shared on official social media channels, further warned that “Strict legal action shall be initiated under the relevant provisions against anyone found involved in such acts. The public is strongly advised to refrain from sharing any information that could lead to the identification of the victim.”
Authorities reiterated that maintaining the anonymity and privacy of sexual assault victims is not merely a legal mandate but also a profound moral obligation, crucial for their dignity and well-being.
The three accused, identified as Monojit Mishra, Pratim Mukherjee, and Zaid Ahmed, had their DNA samples collected on Monday as part of the ongoing investigation. They were taken to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where samples of body fluid, urine, and hair were gathered for comprehensive forensic analysis. A fourth individual, a security guard at the law college, has also been arrested in connection with the case.
This incident has deeply disturbed the city and drawn parallels to a similar high-profile case last year involving the alleged rape and murder of a doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the victim’s identity was unfortunately disclosed multiple times, in direct contravention of legal norms.
The investigation into the present case is progressing rapidly, with the Kolkata Police having formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure a time-bound and thorough probe. CCTV footage from the law college, reportedly corroborating the victim’s account, and the recovery of crucial forensic evidence, including the alleged weapon used and clothing, are central to the ongoing inquiry.
As the legal process unfolds, authorities continue to appeal to the public to respect the victim’s privacy and cooperate in upholding the law, ensuring that justice is served without further distress to the survivor.
